Beaten child's condition upgraded
SOUTH HILL - A 3-year-old girl who was beaten into a coma because she refused to cry has been moved from the intensive care unit to a hospital room amid growing hopes she may survive, officials say.
However, the girl remains unconscious, South Hill Police Chief Norman Hudson said Thursday.
A spokeswoman for the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, where the girl was taken after the July 25 attack, said doctors have upgraded her condition from critical and unstable to stable.
Hudson said hospital officials have told him the girl's fate is uncertain but that she will undergo muscle therapy starting next week in hopes she may regain consciousness.
According to investigators, three of the girl's young relatives began beating her to make her cry. When she wouldn't, they continued to pummel her.
The identities of the children - two boys, 16 and 13, and a girl, 11 - have not been released. They and the injured girl are from Lancaster, S.C., and were visiting relatives in Virginia.
The three face charges of felonious assault.

Custody fight goes to the dog
STAFFORD - It wasn't a typical custody battle. But when it was over, Wendy Robinson's 11-year-old was back home in Fairfax County.
And the man who allegedly stole her three months ago, Dwight N. Glasby Jr., 31, of Stafford County, was in custody.
Robinson's 11-year-old, a Dalmatian named Audrey, was stolen from her home May 20, police said.
Fairfax County police obtained warrants charging Glasby, Robinson's former boyfriend, with breaking and entering and grand larceny of a dog.
Robinson and Glasby had lived together with the dog before their breakup, police said.

Suspect arrested after hot pursuit
FREDERICKSBURG - A Caroline County man who led police on a chase where speeds exceeded 100 mph has been arrested.
Kevin Darnell Brown, 20, was arrested at his home Thursday, about three hours after he sped away from a state trooper who had stopped him because his car's windows were too dark, police said.
Police said Brown wrecked his car during the chase and ran away on foot. Numerous police officers and a state police helicopter were involved in the subsequent search.
Brown was charged with two counts of reckless driving, eluding police, having no driver's license and four other traffic offenses.
