Wythe County names new administrator
WYTHEVILLE - The Wythe County Board of Supervisors has chosen Cellell Dalton to be its new county administrator when Billy Branson retires Sept. 1.
Dalton, 45, has an associate degree in civil engineering from Wytheville Community College and has earned a certification in economic development from Virginia Tech. He worked for the Blacksburg engineering firm of Anderson & Associates for 15 years before joining the Wythe County staff last year as water and sewer director.
His biggest task for the county has involved the planned sewer project in the Fort Chiswell-Max Meadows area near the Wythe-Pulaski county line, and the county's emergency E-911 communications system. He also worked on several county projects while still with Anderson & Associates.
The county is advertising for a new water and sewer system director.
'High tea' planned at Fine Arts Center
PULASKI - The custom of "high tea" will be celebrated by the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the center's annex at 44 Fourth St.
Vivian Colletti of Washington County will recreate the atmosphere of tasting tea in other parts of the world such as England, Wales and the Orient, including the preparation and serving of various teas and customs associated with drinking them.
Tables featuring tea services, bouquets and light food will be on display, along with antique tea pots and cups.
Colletti is a retired commercial artist and interior designer who worked in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. Recently she has been working in fashion and fabric design, and restoring one of Washington County's oldest houses. An exhibit of her textile designs was featured recently at The Art Place in Chilhowie.
The cost is $6 and reservations may be made by calling 980-7363 by Monday.

Prison foes group now Wythe Citizens United
WYTHEVILLE - Wythe Citizens Against the Prison, a grass-roots organization which successfully lobbied against a private prison being located near Wytheville, has gone out of business - sort of.
It has been replaced by a new organization to be called Wythe Citizens United, aimed at giving people a means of speaking out collectively on issues beyond the prison involving the county.
No formal organization with officers is planned, but a newsletter will be published for interested people and periodic membership meetings will be held. Working groups or task forces may be established on specific issues from time to time.
Further information on the newsletter can be obtained by writing Wythe Citizens United, P.O. Box 328, Wytheville, Va. 24382.
The group may no longer have to worry about a state prison, but it is interested in how the county's aging jail will be replaced. The current newsletter carries an article arguing that it would be less costly for the county to join the New River Valley Regional Jail Authority project than to build a new local jail.
