STAPLES GUNS VIRGINIA PAST BELGIAN TEAM

Curtis Staples scored 29 points - all after halftime - as the Virginia men's basketball team evened its record at 1-1 on its six-game trip to Belgium and France with a 107-101 overtime victory over Bree B.C. in Liege, Belgium, on Saturday.

Staples, a Patrick Henry High School alumnus, hit seven 3-point field goals. Courtney Alexander scored 24 points and Norman Nolan added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Alexander scored seven points in the overtime and Staples six as UVa scored on eight of its 10 possessions in the extra session.

Bree B.C. featured former Maryland player Duane Simpkins and former William & Mary player David Cully.

The Cavaliers play Brother Gent today in Gent, Belgium.

In other sports news in the region:

Former NBA standout Scott Skiles scored 22 points and handed out eight assists to pace Greek national champion Athens to a 79-74 win over the Virginia Tech men's basketball team in Antibes, France.

Ace Custis had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Hokies, who dropped to 1-3 on their seven-game European exhibition tour. Keefe Matthews and Troy Manns added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Tech.

Athens led 40-38 at the half before Skiles, who set the NBA single-game assist record with 30 while playing with the Orlando Magic, led a run the lifted the Greek team to a 16-point lead. The closest the Hokies came after that was the final five-point margin.

Anthony Bonner, another former NBA player, had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Athens.

``This was probably our best effort in the four games we've played here,'' said Tech coach Bill Foster. ``Unfortunately, this was the strongest team we have faced.''

The Hokies play again Monday at Lyon, France.

The Roanoke men's recreational tennis team is gunning for a five-match sweep in order to advance to the USTA League Tennis National Championships on Oct.3-6 in Tucson, Ariz. Roanoke meets the Virginia Beach Sharks today at Wintergreen for the USTA Mid-Atlantic sectional title.

Roanoke's Susan Given finished the Parkersburg (W.Va.) half-marathon in a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 58 seconds. Her time placed her fourth in the female masters division and 13th overall.

Paced by VMI graduate Robert Nussey Jr., who walked away with medalist honors by six shots, Brandermill Country Club of Richmond captured the VSGA's State Club Championship in Winchester by 12 strokes.

Lexington Country Club's team of David Brogan, J.W. Entsminger, Lee Faulkner and Reggie Webb finished 28 shots back. The Bedford Country Club squad of John Nichols, Jim Stanley, Al Persinger and John Bond were 37 shots back.
