Business women's conference

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The annual Conference for Women Business Owners and Managers of Southwest Virginia and Upper East Tennessee will be held at Scooter's starting with registration at 8 a.m. Sept. 5.

Sponsors include the Virginia Highlands Community College Small Business Development Center at Abingdon, the Bristol and Washington County Chambers of Commerce, and Main Street Bristol. Scooter's is at 993 Kingsport Highway off Interstate 81 Exit 74A.

The luncheon speaker will be Sherrye Henry, assistant administrator for the Office of Women's Business Ownership of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Before joining the SBA, Henry was an independent producer and broadcaster for her own program on New York radio station WOR and creator and host of "Woman!" on WCBS-TV, where she won an Emmy award for her editorials.

Henry is the author of "The Deep Divide: Why American Women Resist Equality."

The conference will provide participants with information on marketing their businesses, products and services. Speakers, panels and exhibitors will show ways to get the most out of a limited advertising budget.

Following registration, the program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Further information is available at the chamber offices or by calling the Virginia Highlands center at 676-5615.

Western dancing classes scheduled

Classes in Western-style square dancing will be held on Tuesday nights beginning Sept. 10 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Woodmen of the World lodge, 2306 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke.

Classes will also feature some line dancing. No experience is necessary. Classes are open to couples and a limited number of singles.

The fee is $2.50 per person per class.
