MULLINS STILL HAS FIRM GRIP ON FCS FIELD

JIMMY MULLINS charges to his sixth LMS victory of the season at the Callaway oval.

On a night when former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs and his wife came to watch son Coy race, it was Collinsville's Jimmy Mullins who once again stole the show.

Mullins bided his time, passed Dudley Lawhorne on lap 90 and went on to win the Baker Brothers 300 Late Model Stock Car race Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway. It was his sixth win of the season as he continues to dominate the points standings.

Lawhorne took the lead early in the race and led for 88 laps, with Larry Hodges and Mullins battling for second. Hodges' car had handling troubles late in the race, allowing Mullins to jump past him.

Lawhorne's car then faded as Mullins took advantage to win. Lawhorne finished second and Ronnie Newman was third. Hodges ended up sixth.(Results in Scoreboard. B4.)

``We just had to be patient and not force any moves around Hodges to get up front,'' Mullins said. ``We tore the car up last week and we wanted to take it home in decent shape tonight.''

Coy Gibbs finished in 11th place. Gibbs had trouble early on, hitting John Hall and tearing his right-front quarterpanel. Gibbs plans to race at the track next weekend, promoter Whitey Taylor said.

In racing in other divisions:

* Mike Dudley took the pole for the Limited Sportsman race and won his fifth consecutive race and 10th of the season. Chris Martin was second and Kenny Hodges third.

* Dennis Sloan won the Mini Stock race, with Gary Joyce, who was driving with a broken leg, finishing second. Jay Foley was third.

* Steve Cannaday won his fifth consecutive Rookie race, followed by Bob Cregger and Gerald Wingfield. Paul Milner won the AnyCar race.
