BAKER, Pauline S., (``Polly""), 78, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 17, 1996. She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Louis Baker, who is survived by his widow, Deborah Winstead Baker. She is survived by her husband, Edmond L. Baker; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William (``Bill"") and Judith S. Baker; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Au gust 20, 1996, at Oakey's South Chapel, with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble and Dr. George K. Bowers officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's South Chapel. BARGER, Dixie Ne el, 70, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 16, 1996 at her home. Born in Ceres, Va., she was a daughter of the late William T. and Edith Umbarger Neel. Mrs. Barger was a long-time member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert F. Barger; a daughter and son-in-law, Candice B. Puckett, and Michael E. Puckett, Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy F. and Donna S. Barger, Riner; four grandchildren, Jennifer Barger, Emilie Barger, Alexander Puckett, and Tyler Puckett; three sisters, Virginia Covert, Geneva, Fla., Vida Foglesong, Ceres, Va., and Elizabeth Allen, Fairfax; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Neel, Marion; several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4040 Williamson Rd., Roanoke, Va. 24012. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 19, 1996 from Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kenneth P. Lane Jr. will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BURNS, Richard, 69, of Blacksburg, died Friday, August 16, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a member of the National Speleological Society and the New River Valley Grotto. He is survived by two nieces and spouses, Nancy and Robert Stone of Saugatuck, Mich., and Anne and Greg Sushko of Dubuque, Iowa; a nephew, Robert F. Burns III of Maine; a great-nephew, Steven Jones of Saugatuck, Mich.; a great-niece, Heather Sushko of Dubuque, Iowa; a great-niece and great-nephew, Cassie and Robert Burns IV of Maine , and a sister-in-law, Ethel E. CARTWRIGHT, Georgie Bowens, 88, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, August 9, 1996, in New York. Survivors include one sister, Lillian Bowens Jones of Roanoke; one brother, Alfred G. (Virginia) Bowens of Roanoke, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. CHITTUM, Harold Lester, 81, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, August 17, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born January 28, 1915, in Bedford, the son of the late Otho Henry and Lucy Florence Coleman Chittum. He was retired from Reeves Brothers and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Virginia Chittum, and a son, Calvin Elwood Chittum. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Madison of Buena Vista and Nadell Dolan of Chester; a son, Carl Vernon Chittum of Buena Vista; two stepdaughters, Mary Alice Hamilton of Buena Vista and Mildred H. Feltner of Charles City; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a half brother Otho H. Chittum Jr. of Natural Bridge, and a half sister, Opal Chittum of Buena Vista. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 1996, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Edwin A. Sexton officiating. Interment will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lomax Funeral Home.

CLARKSON, Willie Marshall, 80, of Paint Bank, passed away Saturday, August 17, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, infant son, mother, father, four grandsons, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Curtis Meadows of Paint Bank; two brothers, George Clarkson of Paint Bank and Charles Clarkson of Calanhan; three sisters, Ida Fridley of Paint Bank, Margaret Rock of North Carolina an d Ruth Custer of Roanoke, and numerous nieces and nephews. HASSLER, Mary Gennette Dooley, 66, of Lexington, died Sunday, August 18, 1996 in the Stonewall Jackson Hosp ital. Mrs. Hassler was born July 17, 1930 in Bedford County a daughter of the late Wilbert O. Dooley and Mary Etta Overstreet Dooley. She was a member of the Lexington Foursquare Gospel Church and was a school crossing guard for the City of Lexington for 18 years. Mrs. Hassler was the widow of Mark C. Hassler, Sr. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Darlene Clark, Lexington; four sons, Mark C. Hassler, Jr., Lexington, Daniel Alan Hassler, Lexington, Gary Andrew Hassler, Buena Vista, Kendall Lee Hassler, Lexington; one brother, David W. Dooley, Vinton; two sisters, Nancy Pilson, Staunton, Ruth Harlow, Covington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m.. Wednesday, August 21, 1996 at the Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Hunter G. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Timber Ridge A.R.P. Cemetery. ILCONICH, Joseph George, 80, of Daleville, formerly of Rossford, Ohio and North Port, Fla., died Friday, August 16, 1996. He is survived by three daughters, Donna Marie Cudworth of Daleville, Constance Jean Walters of Oregon, Ohio, Jo Ann Itzkowitz of Vernon, Conn.; one stepson, Dan Schmidt of Canton, Ohio; three brothers, George Ilconich and his wife, Minnie, of Rossford, Ohio, Michael Ilconich of New Jersey, Ebb Ilconich of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Anne Chittier and Mary Lynch, both of Pennsylvania; a special sister-in-law, Katherine Ilconich of Rossford, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, August 19,1996 at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel in Daleville, Va., with the Rev. J. Harmon Smith officiating. PRUITT, Robert Lee, 71, of Moneta, died August 17, 1996. Born onSeptember 24, 1924, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Essie Reynolds Pruitt, Sr. He was retired from Lane Furniture Company. Surviving are his wife, Frances Pruitt of the home; one daughter, Sandra Pruitt of Moneta; three sons and daughter-in-law, Donnie Pruitt of Moneta, Jerry and Frances Pruitt of Glade Hill and Eddie Pruitt of Moneta; four sisters, Iva Eames of Moneta, Eva Parker of Hardy, Mary Dunford of Dry Fork and Josephine Trammell of Lexington, N.C.; four brothers, Lewis Pruitt of Hardy, Giles Pruitt of Moneta, John Pruitt of Lexington, N.C., and Clyde Pruitt of Hardy; a special cousin, Randy Pruitt of Chatham, and several nieces and nephews. RICKMAN, Lester H., (``Rick""), 68, of Buchanan, died Sunday, August 18, 1996. He had retired from Wayne Graves Oil Company with over 25 years of service. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Debbie Rickman; companion, Anne S. Mowles; special daughter, Nancy Rickman, and brother, Otis Rickman, all of Buch anan; sister, Evelyn Moore of Roanoke; grandchildren, Destiny and Darin Rickman, and stepgrandson, Jason Gibson. SCOTT, Edna M., 79, of McCoy, died Sunday, August 18, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was a member of Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was preceded in death by her parents, Dexter and Maggie McCoy; brothers, Raymond and Bentley McCoy, sisters, Thelma McCoy, Alma McCoy Johnston and Jean McCoy and three infant siblings. Surviving are her husband, John David Scott, Jr. (June); two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Judy Scott, Gary and Linda Scott; one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Ray Decker, Jr., all of Blacksburg. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Leslie Decker Hale and Jason, Karen Scott Hudson and Robby, Kevin Scott and Becca, Jason Decker, Clay Scott and Mark Decker and one great-grandson, John David Hale. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Rachel McCoy and Lyda McCoy, of McCoy and several nieces and nephews. TARTER, Elbert Clay, 74, of Wytheville, died Saturday, August 17, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Lacy M. and Georgia Lambert Tarter. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Tarter was a member of Wytheville Masonic Lodge #82 A.F.&A.M. and Wythe Royal Arch Chapter #51. He was a retired line foreman from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Tarter Atkinson and Louise Tarter Perri, and a brother, Fred S. Tarter. He is survived by his wife, Juanita King Tarter of the home; two sisters, Lucille Tarter Grubb of Crockett and Martha Tarter Zeppetella of Weymouth, Mass.; three brothers, James L. Tarter of Lima, Ohio, Clayton Tarter of Winnimucca, Nev., and Randolph Tarter of Carson City, Nev., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 1996, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles C. Burnett, the Rev. Richard Collins and the Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.
