Beyer's son rescued after jump

POINT OF ROCKS, Md. - The son of Virginia Lt. Gov. Don Beyer was rescued by two boaters from the Potomac River after jumping from a bridge, authorities say.

Paige Boinest, a spokeswoman for Beyer, confirmed that the man rescued in the incident Sunday in Frederick County was Donald Sternoff Beyer III, the lieutenant governor's 20-year-old son.

The family had no comment about the incident.

``We consider this a family matter and a private matter,'' Boinest said. ``We would hope that everyone would appreciate that.''

Harold and Joan Hill of Frederick were in their motorboat fishing near the bridge on U.S. 15 about 1:45 p.m. when they heard a splash and scream, Joan Hill said. They picked up the young man, who was floating downriver in a strong current.

Murder conviction upheld in fire death

RICHMOND - A federal appeals court Monday upheld the capital murder conviction of a prisoner who doused another inmate with flammable liquid and set him on fire.

Joseph Patrick Payne Sr. was sentenced to death for the slaying of David Wayne Dunford at Powhatan Correctional Center. Dunford was burned over 70 percent of his body in the March 3, 1985, attack. He died nine days later.

Payne claims another inmate, the prosecution's chief witness, committed the murder.

Several inmates testified on Payne's behalf, accusing the prosecution witness of killing Dunford. State and federal courts found that those inmates lacked credibility, however, and a unanimous three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed.

Book details life in Haymarket

MANASSAS - Members of the Prince William County Genealogical Society have spent the past 12 months poring over faded, handwritten church ledgers listing the baptism, marriage and death of nearly everyone who was anyone from Haymarket, Warrenton and surrounding areas.

The fruit of their labors is a genealogist's dream come true - a book called ``Parish Records from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Haymarket, Virginia (Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths: 1837-1995).''

There are records of 1,078 baptisms, more than 300 marriages and 700 to 800 deaths. The book also includes an all-name index and fold-out map of the Manassas Cemetery showing lot numbers and surnames of lot purchasers.

The information came from six church ledgers dating back to 1837, and includes information on the founders of Haymarket, Civil War soldiers and ancestors of today's Haymarket residents.

The Genealogical Society also has published a volume that lists all of the gravestone inscriptions in the Manassas Cemetery.

Swiss man held in drug sting

ALEXANDRIA - A Swiss financier described by federal drug agents as a major international money launderer will remain in federal custody on charges he accepted $2 million in cash in a sting operation, a judge ruled Monday.

Karl Burkhardt and two associates were charged with money laundering after their arrest in the lobby of an Arlington hotel last week. Burkhardt had just accepted a suitcase full of cash from an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent posing as a drug dealer, authorities said.

Burkhardt, 43, planned to fly to Switzerland by private jet after collecting the money, the DEA said.
