The excitement of Radford's outdoor drama "The Long Way Home" can now be experienced year-round.
Jennifer Bunn, a Radford University student and Carroll County native, has created a board game based on the play by Earl Hobson Smith. Players relive Mary Draper Ingles's capture by Shawnee warriors, her escape and 850-mile journey home.
Bunn, a senior at RU, is majoring in elementary education. She created the game as an Appalachian Literature class project. Designed to teach the historic story, the game accommodates four players and is targeted to children ages 7 and older.
The game begins with Ingles' capture and ends when the winner succeeds in bringing the heroine home. Along the way, players are slowed or sent back a number of spaces when they encounter misfortunes. Players advance when their luck holds.
Of the 500 game sets that will be produced, 100 limited editions will be signed by the 1996 "Long Way Home" cast. The Long Way Home game retails for $12 and can be purchased at the theater gift shop. The game includes an insert that tells Ingles' story. Profits will go to "The Long Way Home" nonprofit corporation.
The last performance of "The Long Way Home" this season will be Aug. 31. Performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The trail walk begins at 7 p.m., the box office opens at 7:30, and the play starts at 8. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children.
