NEWCOMB WON'T RUN FOR BEDFORD SEAT 2 OTHER FOREST RESIDENTS SEEK SUPERVISOR OFFICE

Bedford County Supervisor Wayne Newcomb, who was appointed in February to fill an unexpired term representing the county's Forest district, won't run for a full term in a special election this November.

Newcomb, a developer and businessman who owns a chain of steakhouse restaurants, cited time pressures from his business ventures as a reason for his decision.

"I hate not to run," he said. "I think the world of Bedford County, and my heart is there. But right now, I've got 3,200 employees, and I just don't feel able to do both. Time-wise, with the growth we have in the county, it's a major commitment."

Two other Forest residents have stepped up to run, however.

Robert Bashore, dean of student services at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, is circulating petitions and expects to be on the November ballot.

John White, an executive with Technical Publication Services in Forest, has qualified to be on the ballot. Deadline to run is Friday.

Both candidates were interviewed by the Board of Supervisors earlier this year to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of then-Supervisor Henry Creasey.

Bashore said he supports economic development and a strong, educational system.

White, who is supported by Newcomb, said his priority will be revamping the county's Land Use Guidance System to incorporate traditional zoning in growth areas.
