MONTGOMERY SCHOOL BOSS GETS 6% RAISE

Montgomery County Superintendent Herman Bartlett received a boost Tuesday night - or at least a financial one.

In a 6-3 vote, the School Board gave Bartlett an almost 6 percent raise, increasing his annual salary to $88,000.

The board did not discuss the superintendent's contract, which is scheduled to end next spring. Earlier this summer, the board narrowly defeated a two-year contract extension proposal. But at least one board member said recently he would consider a one-year extension if that proposal is raised during the school year.

The board will re-examine the contract at its meeting Sept. 3.

Board Chairman Annette Perkins and members Bernie Jortner and Wat Hopkins voted against the motion.

When he arrived three years ago, Bartlett earned $80,000. One year later, his three-year contract was extended by a year and he received a 4 percent increase. Last year, the board did not give him a raise.

On average, the total salary increase equals about the same increase school employees have received in the past three years.

At Tuesday's meeting, as with most second meetings of the month, the board did not allow a public comment period.

That disappointed the 50 or so parents from the Riner area who came hoping to speak in support of Keith Rowland.

Rowland, principal of Riner Elementary School, was not chosen for the new elementary school under construction. That school will join children from Riner and Bethel elementaries.

Of the five finalists interviewed by a group of parents, teachers and school administrators, Bethel Elementary principal Jeff Perry was selected to head the school.

Before the appointment is final, the School Board must approve the choice. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday night, the board had not made a decision.

Before they left, several Riner parents signed up to speak at the next board meeting.
