USAir has asked the Department of Transportation for permission to fly to London's Heathrow Airport from Charlotte, N.C.; Philadelphia; Boston; and Pittsburgh.
USAir said it needs the routes to compete with the proposed British Airways-American Airlines joint venture.
The carrier said in its filing that it would offer consumers an effective choice of schedules, prices and levels of service between England and nearly 200 U.S. cities. USAir said it would provide the only competition to the British Airways-American alliance service plan in each of the four cities.
USAir already serves Frankfurt and Munich in Germany; Madrid, Spain; Paris; and Rome from the Pittsburgh and Boston airports.
