Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem made a hole-in-one on the next-to-last hole of the tournament to win the 1996 Hogan Mid Atlantic PGA Section championship Wednesday in Williamsburg.
Along with a check for $6,700, Sullivan earned exemptions to the 1996 National Club Professional Championship, the 1997 Nike Dominion Open, the 1997 Kemper Open and the 1997 Michelob Classic.
Sullivan became the first player ever to win MAPGA's Assistant Pros championship and the Section Pros championship in the same year.
Tied with Glen Miller of Fort Washington (Md.) Golf Range after 52 holes, Sullivan knocked a 4-iron from 210 yards on the 17th hole of the Golden Horseshoe Green Course, bouncing it once and slamming it in the hole. Sullivan finished with a three-round total of 209 (6-under par). Miller was second at 211 (4-under). Jeff Sprinkel of Blue Hills Golf Club finished with a round of 70, his best of the championship by five strokes. He wound up tied for 49th place with a total of 225.
The MAPGA Section Championship includes 100 top professional players from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. This year's field was the largest in the event's history, with 186 entries and a purse of more than $47,000.
