BRIZENDINE, Robert B., 82, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 1996. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the Anti-Tank Company, 179th Infantry where he earned the purple heart, the combat infantryman badge and 5 bronze service stars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie; and son, Michael; sister, Clara Lincoln; and brothers, Mack, Ira, Arnold, Frank and Odell. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce Dorton, Troutville, Alice and Clyde Goodin, Tinsley, Kent., Becky and Harvey Riley, Salem, Barbara Brizendine, Roanoke, Bonnie and Rick Petty, Roanoke; brother, Carl Brizendine, Roanoke; also surviving are 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 1996 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel with the Dr. Harry Y. Gamble and Rev. Billy White officiating. DICKSON, Roy Lee, age 63, of Peterstown, W.Va., died Tuesday, August 20, 1996, at his home. Born March 24, 1933, at Union, W.Va., he wa s the son of the late Fleet Everette and Nina Givens Dickson. Mr. Dickson was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Dickson. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. John E. ``Juanita"" Thompson of Pearisburg, Va., Mrs. Donnie ``Elizabeth"" Hazelwood, Lindside, W.Va., Mrs. Leroy ``Sue"" Wickline of Union, W.Va., and Mrs. Larry ``Juda"" Ratliff of Lindside, W.Va.; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday August 23, 1996, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, with the Rev. Tommy Mounts and the Rev. Ralph Smithson officiating. GRAYBILL, Bernice J., 77, of Blue Ridge, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 1996, at the home of her brother, Everett (Pete) Jones. She was the widow of Howard S. Graybill. She was retired from Double Envelope Company and was a member of the Glade Creek Lutheran Church. Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Everett (Pete) and Betty H. Jones, Blue Ridge; two sisters-in-law, Zella L. Jones, Blue Ridge, Una W. Jones, Bedford; nephews, Jerry W. Jones, Michael R. Jones, both of Blue Ridge; nieces, Iris J. Sprout, Wanda J. Hardy, both of Maryland, Candy J. Daniels, Powhatan; two great-nieces, Heather Hardy, Kristin Daniels; lifetime friend, Marie Burkholder, Blue Ridge. HAMMOND, Jacob Carlyle Herndon, 74, of Roanoke, died peacefully Tuesday evening, August 20, 1996, in a local hospital after a strong and courageous battle. Born in Botetourt County, he was the son of the late B. Herndon and Ethel Hylton Hammond. He was a member of Williamson Road Church of the Brethren, and Williamson Road Lodge No.163 A.F.&A.M. where he was a Past Master. He was a graduate of National Business College and retired after a long career in sales. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Christine Saul Hammond; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Wayne Cramer of Daleville; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Velvet Hammond, and Phillip and Sharon Hammond of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Neal, Erika and Lindsey Cramer, Scott and Stacey Hammond, and Warren and Richie Hammond, and many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Williamson Road Church of the Brethren at 11 a.m. Friday, August 23, 1996, with Pastor Harold S. Moyer officiating. MEADOR, Sallie Chewning Campbell, 76, of Roanoke, passed away at her home Wednesday, August 21, 1996, after a three-year battle with lymphoma. She fought with courage and dignity to the very end and never gave up. Born on March 12, 1920, she was a beautiful and s pecial lady who was not only loved by her family and friends, but by everyone she knew. She touched everyone's life in a very special way. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. Sallie graduated from Stewartsville High School in 1939 and retired from Mick-or-Mack Stores Company (Williamson Road store) in 1982. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd A. Campbell; her parents, Pet and Della Chewning; two brothers, Jerry Chewning and Robert (``Bob"") Chewning, and a niece, Judi Shannon. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Alton T. Meador Sr.; a stepson and wife, Alton T. Meador Jr. and Fujiyo of Layton, Utah; two stepdaughters and husbands, Juanita C. and Frank D. Morris Jr., and Pamela M. and Richard T. Cooke of Roanoke; one stepgranddaughter, and four stepgrandsons. Also surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mabel C. and Leonard (``Pete"") McLain, and Nancy C. and Paul Thompson of Vinton; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward (``Edd"") and Connie Chewning of Sacramento, Calif., Jim and Claudine Chewning of Roanoke, Melvin and Marie Chewning, Clarence (``Dick"") and Janie Chewning, Bill and Jean Chewning, Nelson (``Corky"") and Shirley Chewning, and Alvin and Peggy Chewning of Vinton; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine W. Chewning of Roanoke and Barbara B. (``Bootie"") Chewning of Vinton, and numerous nieces and nephews. Sallie had been a member of the Vinton Moose Lodge for 29 years. She held numerous offices, serving as Treasurer, Chaplain, Junior Regent, Argus, Sentinel and Guide. She was always there to lend a hand when and where she was needed, with a smile and an unwavering positive attitude, to and for her fellow co-workers. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 23, 1996, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, with services by Women of the Moose, Chapter 1551. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Mr. Saul was retried from Norfolk Southern Railway after 40 years service and was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. Surviving are his wife, Augusta Stewart Saul; one son, Arnold Saul and his wife Audrey, Blacksburg; two grandsons, A ndy Saul and his wife, Rebecca, Houston, Texas; Alan Saul, Richmond; one brother, Bud Floyd Saul, Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews.
