CHANGES AIM TO EASE WEEKEND TRAFFIC CRUNCH

With 8,500 students moving into the dorms at Virginia Tech this weekend, this might not be the best time to cruise around the Duck Pond or plan a leisurely drive through downtown Blacksburg

Several changes are being made to streets that run through the Tech campus to downtown Blacksburg and to campus parking lots to ease the traffic crunch. The changes include:

Washington Street will become a one-way street Saturday and Sunday with traffic moving west to east from Cassell Coliseum toward Kent Street and downtown Blacksburg. Tech officials expect slow moving traffic along this stretch because of the large dormitories located there. They recommend people avoid using Washington Street if possible.

Areas closest to residence halls become one-hour loading zones through Sunday. This includes parking lots closest to Shultz, Owens and Dietrick halls, the coliseum and the Agriculture Quadrangle parking lots, as well as on-street parking along Turner, Kent and Washington streets and the south side of the Drillfield. Any vehicles parked in these areas for any purpose other than student loading will be ticketed.

Beginning Wednesday, the parking lot at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center will be closed for 10 days to finish construction and paving. Parking meters on College Avenue from the corner of the Donaldson Brown lot to Squires Student Center, along Otey Street in front of Donaldson Brown and along the north side of Roanoke Street will be covered, and the spaces can be used by anyone.
