UNCOMMON DUO HONORED BY VAS

Virginia Amateur Sports, the Roanoke-based organizer of the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, has selected Elizabeth Higgins of Clifton Forge and Kenny Narron Jr. of Hopewell as the state's Citgo National Congress of State Games Athletes of the Year.

Higgins, a karate brown-belt and a computer assistant for the U.S. Forest Service, won Commonwealth Games gold medals in the women's brown-belt Kata category and the weapons adult under-black belt category. She also won a silver in the Kumite category for women's brown belts.

Narron, 17, dominated the bowling competition during the Commonwealth Games with the top scores in any age bracket. The rising senior at Hopewell High School has 11 perfect games since taking up the sport at age 13.

Citgo and the National Congress of State Games began honoring athletes of the year in 1994 for exceptional accomplishments on and off the playing field. Higgins and Narron are finalists for the national athlete of the year award to be presented Sept.20 in Rochester, Minn.

The Commonwealth Games attracted 9,472 participants in July, a 7.7 percent increase from last year. The bulk of the 1997 Games will be July 18-20 in the Roanoke Valley.
