A citizens committee on the "smart road" is eyeing a way to conserve a natural area in the Ellett Valley, possibly with help from the Virginia Tech Foundation and The Nature Conservancy. The Smart Road Citizens Advisory Committee agreed Thursday to contact the Tech foundation and The Conservancy to find out if either group would help purchase land in the Ellett Valley to protect the endangered smooth coneflower. The committee didn't specify the cost or size of the proposed tract.

"One of the first resolutions this committee passed had to do with the Virginia Department of Transportation making compensation for the land they were taking by giving land somewhere else - specifically preserving the smooth coneflower site," said committee Chairman Bill Richardson. The 13-member citizen committee was created by the Virginia Department of Transportation to advise it on environmental and design issues.
