ASBURY, Mamie McCready, 94, of Saltville, died Thursday, August 22, 1996 at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va. Mrs. Asbury was the oldest member of the McCready United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Asbury. Survivors include two daughters, Olivene A. Farris, Saltville, Jane Leach, Tampa, Fla.; three sons, Charles Asbury, E. T. Asbury, both of Saltville, Bob Asbury, Marion; two sisters, Nannie Nutter, Glade Spring, Sammy Routh, Erwin, Tenn.; two brothers, Herbert McCready, Saltville, Robert McCready, Abingdon; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; two great-great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie McCready Asbury will be conducted 4 p.m .Sunday, August 25, 1996 in the D. R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Glenda Dennison and the Rev. Mark Asbury officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. Lance Asbury, Terry Asbury, E. P. Ogle, Charlie Bill Nutter, Walter Evans, and Bud Hall will serve as pallbearers. BREEDEN, Grace Kesler, 77, of Roanoke, departed this life on Thursday, August 22, 1996. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert Cli nton Breeden, her mother, Mary E. Kessler, her father, Russell A. Kessler, and two sons-in-law, William D. Stevens and Beverlye L. Young, and a great-grandson, William D. Stevens II. She was a faithful member and Sunday School Teacher of the Truth Seekers Class of Melrose Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Breeden was retired from the Life of Virginia as an office manager. Surviving are a daughter, Marcheta Stevens Young, Daleville; grandchildren, Terri Stevens and Michael A. Huffman, and Kevin S. and Michele D. Stevens; and two great-grandsons, Billy and Steven Huffman, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 26, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. DALTON, Gladys Bertha Jennings, 95, of Salem, passed away Thursday, August 22, 1996. She was a resident of Snyder Nursing Home and formerly of Langhorn St., S.E., Roanoke. She was a long time member of Belmont Baptist Church, Roanoke. She was formerly employed by American Viscoe Company for many years and retired from Richards Cleaners. She was preceded in death by her husband, Giles O. Dalton. She is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Rosa J. Richards, Salem, Bessie J. and Henry Bassetti, Alexandria, Claudia J. Hubbard, Salem, Lora J. Caligan, Salem, Margie J. Wade, Roanoke; sister-in-law, May Dalton, Radford; many nieces and nephews. FEAZELL, Stella Virginia 83, of Callaway, passed away Friday, August 23, 1996 in a Salem Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Feazell; and an infant daughter, Mildred Ann. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Vernon Lackey, Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry ""Joe"" and Liz Feazell, Fincastle, Rodney and Patty Feazell, Callaway; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray France, Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. HENRIE, Dolly Lavelle, of Panguitch, Utah, died Thursday, August 22, 1996. Surviving are a daughter, Alice Priest, Salem, Oregon; two sisters, Lethia Lavelle Smith, Roanoke and Fawnie Lavelle Roadruck, Grants Pass, Oregon; two brothers, Eugene Lavelle and Alton B. Lavelle, both of Roanoke; and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services were in Panguith, Utah.

JARVIS, Colonel Bealie, Jr., (``C. B.""), 69, of Rt. 1, Rural Retreat, died early Friday, August 23, 1996 in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., the son of the late Colonel Bealie and Lena Jennings Jarvis, Sr. Mr. Jarvis was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat and was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Shirley Jarvis. He is survived by his wife, Edna Crigger Jarvis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Kell, Pam and Henry Corvin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Jarvis, Larry and Debbie Jarvis, Doug and Judy Jarvis, all of Rural Retreat; one sister, Lucille Barker, Bristol, Va.; one brother, Raymond Jarvis, Sugar Grove; fifteen grandchildren also survive. JOHNSON, Melvin C., 44, of Washington D.C., formerly of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 1996. Melvin Conrad Johnson was born in Roanoke, Va. and attended Roanoke City Public Schools. He later relocated to Washington, D.C. where he worked as a Chef/Cook. Survivors include mother, Bessie M. Gray and father, Melvin Finney, both of Roanoke; one daughter, Shamika Kelly, Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Gail Johnson, Roanoke, Angelia Johnson, Charlotte, N.C., Andrea Johnson, Melonie Johnson Brown, Tanya Johnson, all of Roanoke; two brothers, Cornelius Johnson and Vincent Finney; two aunts, Susie Morman and Ruby Baxter, all of Roanoke; special friends, the Gray Finney Ferguson Simpson, and Robinson families; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. KUMMER, Barbara Brown, 63, of Salem died Thursday, August 22, 1996 in a Salem Hospital. She retired in 1994 after teacher for more than 20 years at Glenvar Elementary School. McCATHERN, William Walker, 88, of Roanoke, past President and Chairman of the Board of the former Colonial American National Bank, died Friday morning, August 23, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. A native of Waynesboro, GA and an alumnus of Georgia Tech, Mr. McCathern came to Roanoke in 1937, as manager for the local office of Universal C.I.T. Corp., where he worked until moving to the former Liberty Trust Bank of Roanoke. In 1946 he moved to the Colonial American National Bank as vice-president, was elected Senior Vice-President in 1961, a Director in 1962, Executive Vice-President in 1963, and succeeded to the Presidency in 1970. He was a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Mr. McCathern served as president of the Roanoke Merchants Association, the Better Business Bureau, Roanoke Recreation Association and the Blue Ridge Game and Fish Association. He has served on the Finance Committee at Virginia Heights Baptist Church and on the Boards of the Roanoke Youth Council, Junior Achievement, Salvation Army Boys Club, Roanoke Booster Club, Lions Club, Sales Executive Club, Izack Walton Leag ue, and on the Advisory Council of Distributive Education and Victory Stadium Committee, the Virginia Industrial Development Corporation and was appointed to the Comptroller of the Currency's Regional Advisory Board for the Fifth National Bank Region. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Shenandoah Life Insurance Company from 1971 to 1979. He retired from the Colonial American National Bank Shares in 1981. His wife, the former Florence Pugh Moss of Beckley, W. Va., died in 1975. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ann McCathern and Leslie William Burnley of Roanoke and Richmond; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Walker, Jr. and Jessie Howbert McCathern of Richmond and Roanoke, George Michael and Alyce McCathern of Tuxedo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a long-time, devoted friend, Ruth S. Spradlin of Roanoke; two brothers, James Monroe McCathern of Old Hickory, Tenn. and Francis Woodward McCathern of Spokane, Wash. The remains will rest at Oakey Funeral Home, Downtown, Roanoke, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park, with Dr. Daniel E. Scott and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. OTEY, William A., 77 of 1700 Kingston Circle, Bedford, died Friday, August 23, 1996 in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County, September 21, 1918, a son of the late Alexander Bane Otey and Gelia Elizabeth Clements Otey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Collins A. Otey; and his sister, Elizabeth Otey Young. Bill was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Rubatex Corp. with 32 years of service. He was a Charter Member of the Thaxton Ruritan Club with 14 years of perfect attendance. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marion Watson Otey; a son, Warren A. Otey, Lynchburg; daughter, Linda O. Nofsinger and her husband, Ralph G. Nofsinger, Union Hall; four grandchildren, Cherri Otey Terry, Tracey Otey Wilson, David A. Nofsinger and Amy S. Nofsinger; a great-granddaughter, Jessica O'Hare Terry; and a brother-in-law, Richard Elmo Watson, Chesapeake. POFF, Lawrence L., 86, of Pearisburg, Va. died Thursday, August 22, 1996 at a Princeton, W. Va. hospital. He was born July 26, 1910 at Sabetha, Kansas and was the son of the late John Henry and Oma Della Murray Poff. Mr. Poff was a retire employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Corp., was very active in the rodeo circuit as a bull rider during the 1930's and was a member of the Pearisburg First Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Babb Poff; his second wife, Alberta Poff; four brothers, Orville, Lester, Charles and James ""Pete"" Lee Poff. Surviving is one daughter, Doris Belcher and her husband Dale, Peterstown, W. Va.; one brother, Orsie Poff, Sabetha, Kansas; two sisters, Pearl Blume and Ruby Moon, both of Lakewood, Colorado; granddaughter, Debbie Page and her husband, Tony, Peterstown, W. Va.; a grandson, Kevin Belcher and his wife, Jennifer, of Katy, Texas; two great-grandsons, Chris and Ryan. TOLBERT, Jesse Flayton, 91, formerly of Rt. 2, Dublin, passed away Friday, August 23, 1996 at his daughter's home in Bluefield, W.Va. He was the son of the late Ribble and Betty Lane Tolbert. He attended the Rockford United Methodist Church in Radford, Va. and managed the Dalton Farms at Radford and Dublin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Neal and Jim Tolbert, one sister, Crystal Kirby and one grandson, Kenneth Michael Estes. He is survived by his wife, Della Mabry Tolbert; son, Jesse Raymond Tolbert, Waynesboro; daughter, Margaret Tolbert Estes, Bluefield, W.Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Paris Tolbert, White Gate, Emory Tolbert, Bland; sisters, Mary Sink, Annie Sink, Edith Nicewander and Frances Stevens, all of White Gate, and Martha Shepherd, Dublin. WHITTEN, Patrick Dean Jr., of 209 Chesterfield Rd., Lynchburg, died Thursday, August 22, 1996, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Phyllis S. Whitten. Born in Pleasant View, he was the son of Patrick D. and Effie Nuckols Whitten. He served a tour of duty with the U. S. Navy and was retired from Babcock & Wilcox Navy Nuclear Fuel Division with 36 years of service. He was a member of and fellow of the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing and a past chair of the local chapter, He was a member of Hill City Masonic Lodge #183 and an inactive member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis L. Whitten. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Patrick G. and his wife, Nora Whitten, of Akron, Ohio; one daughter, Wanda Kaye and her husband West Hicks, of Evington; two grandsons, John Patrick and Andrew Cary Whitten, of Akron; a brother, Augustus D. Whitten, of Buena Vista; three sisters, Ocie McNeil, of Hampton, Mamie Ogden, of Madison Heights and Mildred McCormick, of Buena Vista; and several nieces and nephews. WILSON, Josephine Monseur, of Roanoke, affectionately called ""Honey"" or ""Joe"" by family and friends, passed away at her home, Thursday, August 22, 1996, from Non-Hodgin's Lymphoma Cancer. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. A life-long residence of Roanoke, she graduated from St. Andrews Catholic High School. She worked for many years in restaurants as a waitress, including her cousin's restaurant, the old George's Drive-in on Walnut Ave, her cousins' restaurant, the old Trade Winds on Franklin Rd., and the old Kenny's Fast Food restaurant on Williamson Rd. She last worked at Shoney's on Hershberger Rd., retiring in 1991. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. Mrs. Wilson was pre-deceased by her parents, Solomon and Elizabeth Ellis Monseur, of Roanoke, and her oldest sister, Mrs. Mary Authur, of Portsmith, Ohio. Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Samuel C. Wilson, a U.S. Forest Service retiree; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol T. Wilson-Bunn and James C. Bunn II, Falls Church, Va., Angela M. Wilson, Roanoke, and Sarah W. Cook and Ronald A. Cook, Roanoke; one grandson, Samuel A. Cook; one granddaughter, Carly J. Cook; two sisters, Marie M. Turner and Mae K. Monseur, both of Roanoke; one brother, Solomon Monseur, Granite, N.C.; a number of nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and other kind, caring relatives, friends and neighbors.
