STANLEY MANAGER PROMOTED

BOB SMITH has been promoted to vice president quality assurance at Stanley Furniture Co. Inc. following the retirement of HERMAN HALEY.

Smith joined Stanley in 1977 as superintendent of the finishing plant at Stanleytown. He has held various positions at both the Stanleytown and former Waynesboro facilities since then, most recently as plant manager.

Stanley Furniture manufactures wood and upholstered furniture in five facilities in Stanleytown and Robbinsville, Lexington and West End, N.C.

ADVERTISING

RACHEL A. DAILEY has joined The Packett Group as a graphic designer. She comes to Roanoke from Northern Virginia where she was a computer artist at Stackig Advertising and Public Relations.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

DAVID W. KRAUS has been appointed director of admissions at Radford University. He was admission director at the University of New Hampshire for four years, and before that, associate director for eight years.

A. H. "HANK" HUMPHREYS JR. has been named director of major and planned giving in the office of institutional advancement at Emory & Henry College. An alumnus of Emory & Henry, he returns to the college from the College of William and Mary's School of Marine Science and Virginia Institute of Marine Science, where he was assistant to the director. He also was the principal staff member for the institute's advisory council.

COMPUTERS

JIM MAY has been appointed director of consulting services for Roanoke and Lynchburg at Solution Software Inc. of Roanoke. His responsibilities will include field office support for new and existing clients.

CONSTRUCTION

PATRICK McDANIEL has been promoted to assistant vice president at Lanford Brothers Co. Inc., a Roanoke road and bridge construction company. McDaniel, who has been with Lanford Brothers for eight years, is a project manager and coordinator.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

CHRISTIE MEREDITH has joined the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce as a vice president for local issues. In addition to working on local issues, she will provide staff support to the chamber's Leadership Roanoke Valley program. Meredith has worked as a legislative aide to Del. Vic Thomas, D-Roanoke, and Del. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg.

ENVIRONMENT

Environmental Directions Inc. in Roanoke has elected new directors to its board: DEB OYLER, president of EDI; ARNOLD JONES, president of Williams Supply Inc.; and ANDY WILLIAMS, investment limited partner of J.C. Bradford & Co.

INSURANCE

JOANNE BLANKENSHIP has joined Roanoke-based Delta Dental Plan of Virginia as manager of accounting. She previously worked for Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield.

JANICE D. MESSEROFF has been named president and chief executive officer of United HealthCare of Virginia, a proposed health maintenance organization formed through a joint venture between Virginia's Physician Network and a subsidiary of United HealthCare Corp., based in Minneapolis. Virginia's Physician Network initially was organized by the Medical Society of Virginia, a statewide association of more than 6,800 physicians.

MANUFACTURING

PER LINDQUIST is leaving his position as president and chief executive officer of Greensboro, N.C.-based Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. to take a management position with Volvo Truck Corp. KARL-ERLING TROGEN, president of Volvo Truck Corp. and chairman of the board of Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp., has assumed the operational responsibility of the company until a new president is named. Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. operates an assembly plant in Dublin.

MEDIA

JAN WILKINS has been named marketing director for radio stations WLQE AM and FM based in Moneta. In addition to providing marketing services, he also will represent them in sales development in the Roanoke area. Wilkins, president of Jan Wilkins Enterprises, a Roanoke advertising and promotion agency, will continue to promote shows and special events in the eastern United States.

MEDICINE

DR. W. SCOTT WEAVER has opened a dental practice in Roanoke. Weaver's experience includes service in the Navy Dental Corps, which he entered in 1976. He is certified by the Board of General Dentistry and has attained Mastership status in the Academy of General Dentistry.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Several business and government officials from Southwestern Virginia have been elected officers of Southwest Development Financing Inc., a $1.5 million revolving tourism loan project funded by grants obtained by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon. They are ROBERT W. THOMAS, owner and president of B&B Media Inc. of Radford, chairman; CHRISTIANNE PARKER, assistant administrator of Washington County, vice chairman; JENNIFER JONES, executive director of Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce, secretary; and PAUL KUCZKO, Lonesome Pine Office on Youth in Wise, treasurer. Thomas replaces FRED PARKER, treasurer of Washington County, who was chairman of Southwest Development Financing for several years.
