ARCHER, Joseph Edward, 82, of Goodview, passed away Friday, August 23, 1996. He was the owner of Joe Archer Amoco on the corner of Williamson Road and Orange Avenue in Roanoke. He was best known in the Roanoke area for his hometown loyalty by advertising as Joe Archer Amoco, from Butler, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Frances Archer; sisters, Helen Archer Bopp and Emma Archer Vickey, and a brother, William Archer. He is survived by his wife, Lottie Aliff Archer; a son, Timothy Archer, and daughter-in-law, Halide Salam, of Blacksburg; a daughter, Andrea Archer of Tallmadge, Ohio; sons, Joseph Archer Jr. and Gary Archer of Butler, Pa., and Jan Archer of Norfolk; sisters, Mary Archer McCoy of Grove City, Pa., and Ann Archer Fehrs of New Wilmington, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Esther Archer of Butler, Pa., and a nephew, Edward Bopp and wife Maxine of Butler, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday, August 27, 1996, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Robert W. Lanier officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends after 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Roanoke.

BLACKWELL, James E., (``Uncle Jim""), 72, of Meadowview, died Friday, August 23, 1996, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, living in the Blackwell Chapel community. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of Blackwell Chapel Union Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. A retired farmer, Mr. Blackwell was a member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post #6975 and the American Legion. Survivors include three brothers, Clarence W. Blackwell of Meadowview, Ernest Blackwell of Bristol, Va., and Roscoe Blackwell of Bristol, Tenn., and four sisters, Lucille Snodgrass of Abingdon, Virgie Crabtree of Meadowview, Mary Martin of Emory and Geneva (``Polly"") Hoback of Roanoke. Funeral services for Mr. James E. ``Uncle Jim"" Blackwell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blackwell Chapel Union Church, with the Rev. John Blanken officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon. Active pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Hockett, Ralph Scott, George Arnett, Ernie Cardwell and the men of Blackwell Chapel Church. Military graveside services will be conducted by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post #6975. The family will accept flowers and memorial contributions to Blackwell Chapel Church. BOWMAN, Samuel Calvin, 76, of Troutville, died Saturday, August 24, 1996. He was a lifetime member of the Trinity Church of the Brethren; and is survived by his wife, Carlene Rieley Bowman; one son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Peggy Bowman of Vinton; three daugh ters and two sons-in-law, Linda B. and Vic Sisson, Nancy B. and Sam Pillis, all of Troutville, Anne B. Stump of Hardy; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Stone, Rachel Bowman, both of Roanoke, Caroline and Calvin Firebaugh of Troutville; eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 26, 1996, at the Rader Daleville Chapel, with the Rev. Paul White and the Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in the Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. CRULL, Chelsea Jolyn, 3 months, of Fort Bragg, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, August 23, 1996. Surviving are her parents, Dane and Angel Crull of Fort Bragg; a brother, Blake Crull; grandparents, Joey and Linda Sanders, and George and Caroline Crull of Vinton, Va., and Marceil Crull of Palatine, Ill.; aunts, Tonia Sanders of Vinton and Tammy Crull of Hastings, N.Y., and uncles, Michael Summers Jr. and Cody Sanders of Vinton, and Gary Crull and wife Sue of Buffalo Grove, Ill. GAMBOA, Mildred Jane, 65, died Friday, August 23, 1996, in Seattle, Wash., after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Eugene and Hazel Garland Arnett of Anthras, Tenn. She is survived by her daughter, Arnette Crocker Tressel, and grandchildren, Gretchen Hunter Tressel and Paul Samuel Tressel III, all of Salem and Smith Mountain Lake, Va. She is also survived by daughters Alene Brede of Seattle and Stephanie Adams of Dayton, Ohio. She had 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ho wden Kennedy of Seattle, with memorial and graveside services attended by family and friends on Saturday morning.

KENNEDY, Shirley B., 67, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, August 23, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur C. Berry and Maime Vanlear Wilmoth, and a sister, Dorothy Mae Paterno. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward C. and Jacqueline C. Kennedy of Roanoke, and Michael and Mabel K. Fox of Charlottesville; a sister, Jo Ann Potter of Roanoke; a brother, Robert S. Berry of Clifton Forg e; five grandchildren, and 10 nieces and nephews. McCLANAHAN, Curtis E., 59, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Grundy, died Friday, August 9, 1996, following an extended illness. He had been a resident of Palm Beach Gardens since 1982. He was a musician, poet and song writer. He was the son of the late James A. and Lula McClanahan. Upon retirement from NASA, he was an electrical technician, having worked on the first space shuttle. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed McClanahan. He is survived by his wife, Dolly McClanahan; three daughters, Debra Hause, Trappe, Md., Rebecca Garcia and Tammy Baquera, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one son, Randall McClanahan of Trappe, Md.; five grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford McClanahan, Baltimore, Md., Dave McClanahan, Check, Va., L. C. McClanahan, Lexington, N.C.; four sisters, Ruby Ling, Check, Margie Hale, Elliston, Daphine Davis, Roanoke and Kitty Rakes, Shawsville. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 13, at Temple Methodist Church, West Palm Beach, Fla. Burial was in Riverside Memorial Gardens, Jupiter, Fla.

MOORE, George Junior, (KE4HD), 73, of Salem, passed away Saturday, August 24, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was former owner of Electric and Security Systems. He was a member of American Legion Post #3 and served with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Stewart Moore; sons and daughters-in-law, G. Wayne and Susan Moore, Roanoke, Fred S. and Mary Lou Moore, Salem; grandchildren, Andy, Casey, and Gregory Moore; brother, Ray Moore, Montgomery, Ohio; sister, Ruth Penny, Florence, Ky. Graveside services will be held Monday, August 26, 1996, at 10 a.m., Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Mark Radecke officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John M. ODLE, Ruth Etta, 92, of Bristol, Va., died Friday, August 23, 1996, in the Bristol Nursing Home. She was a life long resident of the Bristol area, and a member of the Saint Luke United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Leota Walker of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Jetta Albert, Pulaski; two grandsons, Randy Walker, Fairfax, and David Walker, Bristol, Va. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Ryan Walker, Fairfax. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Susong Cemetery, Bristol, Va., with Dr. James McReynolds officiating. SHELTON, Grover Alfred, Sr., 73, of Floyd passed away Saturday, August 24, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II He was preceded in death by a son, Grover A. Shelton, Jr. Survivors include one son, Harry ""Sonny"" Shelton, Floyd; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Donnie Pratt, Floyd, Linda and Brian Srygley, Blacksburg; four brothers, Roy Shelton, Dallas Shelton, both of Floyd, Harold Shelton, Roanoke, Herbert Shelton, Salem; two sisters, Faye Bolt, Annie Dickerson, both of Floyd; a special friend, Suzanne Duenas, Floyd; four grandchildren, Tequilla Shelton, Brian Pratt, David Pratt, Lucas Holden. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leon Wood officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. SMITH, Shirley Ann, 52 of Route 1, Dublin passed away Friday, August 23, 1996 at her home. Born in Mt. City, Tenn. on September 18, 1943, she was a daughter of Clarence Stout of Mt. City, Tenn. and the late Dora Stout. She had been employed at St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital in Radford for 20 years. She was a member of the Montgomery County Women of the Moose. Survivors in addition to her father is her husband, Leonard L. Smith; six daughters, Jane Reed, Nashville, Tenn., Melissa O'Dell, Seattle, Wash., Penny O'Dell, Radford, Linda Kenley, Radford, Debbie Rose, Nicholasville, Kent. and Christine Smith, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Josephine Laine, Todd, N.C., Vinie Stout, Mountain City, Tenn. and Mary Wallace, Mountain City, Tenn.; two brothers, Charles Stout, Mountain City, Tenn. and Richard Stout, Roan Mountain, Tenn.; six grandchildren; special friend, Jeff O'Dell. Memorial services will be held Monday, August 26, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Methodist Church with the Rev. Barry Taylor officiating. SORRELL, Louise Hinds, 59, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Thursday, August 22, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Sorrell Jr. of Naples; two daughters, Kimberly Smith of Naples and Sara DePauw of Tampa, Fla.; two granddaughters, and one brother, Wayne Hinds of Galax, Va. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Pittman Funeral Home in Naples, with the Rev. Paul M. Sorrell officiating.

STANLEY, Richard Yeatts, 58, of Abingdon and formerly of Patrick County, died Saturday, August 24, 1996, at his home in Abingdon. Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by his father, Cornelius Stanley. Mr. Stanley was a 33rd degree Mason with Dan River Lodge #129 in Madison, N.C. He also was a Shriner. Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Umbarger Stanley of the home, and his mother, Mrs. Vera Y. Stanley of Meadows of Dan. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jack Holland, Clarence Marshall and Henry Horton officiating. Interment will follow in the Yeatts Family Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, as well as Masonic rites by Mountain Home Lodge #263. TEMPLE, Dorothy Catlin, 57, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 23, 1996, in a Salem hospital. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Michael King, Anna and Jason Foster, all of Roanoke; mother, Dorothy Catlin, Nichols, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one sister, Rose Berry and husband, John Berry, Nichols, N.Y.; one brother, Jerry Catlin and wife, Marge Catlin, West Danby, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. TINNEY, Anna Belle Johnston, 77, of Colonial Heights, died Thursday afternoon, August 22, 1996, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Harry S. and Bessie K. Johnston, a native of Monterey and the widow of Robert W. Tinney. Mrs. Tinney was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and the retired owner of Stevens and Maclin Record Shop in Petersburg. She was also affiliated with several other organizations, The Joy Club, Credit Women International, Senior Citizens Club and Recycled Teenagers. Mrs. Tinney is survived by her daughter, Dorothy T. Mizelle of Colonial Heights; two sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Anne C. Tinney of Buchanan, and Michael G. and Charlene A. Tinney of Laurel, Md.; seven grandchildren, Kenneth F. Edwards of Charlotte, N.C., Stephen D. Edwards of Colonial Heights, James W. Mootz of Powhatan, Christopher R. Tinney and Lisa A. Tinney of Richmond, and Bradley R. Tinney and Daniel G. Tinney of Laurel, Md., and a sister, Eula Harris of Suitland, Md. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 26, 1996, at Highland United Methodist Church, with the Rev.
