The passing of quarterback Jim Druckenmiller and the running of tailback Ken Oxendine highlighted Virginia Tech's controlled football scrimmage Saturday night.
Druckenmiller connected on 8 of 18 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He had a five-yard scoring toss to split end Cornelius White and a 15-yarder to tight end Shaine Miles, a Salem High School alumnus.
Oxendine showed his best form of fall practice by rushing four times for 72 yards. He had a 39-yard touchdown run. Other touchdowns were scored on runs by freshman tailbacks Andre Kendrick and Shyrone Stith and veteran back Marcus Parker.
Freshman Shayne Graham, from Pulaski County High School, made field goals of 40, 27 and 49 yards and missed from 42 yards.
On defense, end Cornell Brown had two quarterback sacks and two other tackles. Freshman cornerback Anthony Midget and senior linebacker Myron Newsome led the team with six tackles apiece.
In other sports news in the region:
* Tim Sherman passed for 233 yards and three touchdowns Saturday and Germane Crowell caught 10 passes for 146 yards and a score during Virginia's first fall scrimmage.
Sherman, a fifth-year senior fighting for the starting job, completed 20 of 37 passes, including TD throws of 65 yards to Crowell, 39 yards to Derick Byrd and 19 yards to Terrence Wilkins. He was intercepted once.
Aaron Brooks, a sophomore who coach George Welsh said has been Sherman's equal through spring and fall practice, connected on 15 of 23 passes for 109 yards. Brooks also threw an interception, but no touchdown passes.
Welsh has said he will name his starting quarterback on the Sunday before Virginia's regular season-opener on Sept. 7 against Central Michigan.
The Cavaliers' defense fared better against the run than the pass, holding senior tailback Tiki Barber to 32 yards in eight carries. Anthony Southern was the leading rusher with 39 yards on eight carries, including a 2-yard TD.
Besides Crowell, Wilkins was the most popular target for the quarterbacks. He had seven catches for 39 yards, while Byrd and true freshman Thomas Jones, last season's AP Group A player of the year, each caught five passes.
Linebacker Dillon Taylor led all defenders with nine tackles, including a sack, and end Duane Ashman had six tackles, including two sacks.
Defensive backs Anthony Poindexter and Joe Rowe had the interceptions.
* Curtis Staples scored 32 points to lead Virginia's men's basketball team to an 88-73 victory over St.Jean de Maurienne in the final game of the Cavaliers' six-game tour of Belgium and France. Virginia completed the trip with a 3-3 record.
Staples made 7 of 11 3-point attempts in the game. Courtney Alexander added 19 points, Jamal Robinson scored 14 and had six assists, and Norman Nolan had 10 points.
* The New River Valley Speedway will be full of talent today in the Eagle Country PSK/Skoal 200. Returning to the track are Stacy Compton, who is taking a brief break from Winston Cup action, and Johnny Rumley, who has posted 30 victories to date at NRVS.
The track is expecting a large Late Model field in the 100-lap event due to several neighboring tracks having the weekend off. The Mid Atlantic Modified Tour will be the special feature of the event. Gates open at 10 a.m., with practice beginning at noon. The first division takes the green flag at 4 p.m.
* Steve Holpe of Roanoke was the runner-up Friday in the Super Senior Division of the Virginia Senior Amateur Championship. Holpe fell 4 and 3 to Hal Gould of Alexandria.
