William McCathern, past president and board chairman of the former Colonial American National Bank, died Friday. He was 88.
McCathern started his career at Colonial American in 1946 after working at the former Liberty Trust Bank of Roanoke. Crestar Bank bought out Colonial American, the second-largest bank in Roanoke, in the mid-1980s.
He served on the board of numerous civic groups in the Roanoke Valley and headed several.
Warner Dalhouse, former chairman of First Union National Bank of Virginia, remembers McCathern as a friendly competitor. In the 1950s, when Dalhouse started at First National Exchange Bank, which later became Dominion Bank, then First Union, McCathern already was a respected, well-liked member of the business community.
"He was a real gentleman and a very capable banker," Dalhouse said.
