WHO ARE THE DELEGATES? VIRGINIA'S DELEGATION TO THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION INCLUDES BIG NAMES - SEN. CHARLES ROBB, LT. GOV. DON BEYER AND THE STATE'S DEMOCRATIC MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ALTHOUGH REP. RICK BOUCHER OF ABINGDON IS PASSING UP THE TRIP TO REMAIN HOME IN HIS SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA DISTRICT. BUT MOST OF THE ROSTER ARE RANK-AND-FILE PARTY ACTIVISTS. THESE ARE THE DELEGATES THAT DEMOCRATS IN WESTERN VIRGINIA ARE SENDING TO THE CONVENTION, AND SOME OF THE HOPES AND CONCERNS THEY HAD ON THEIR MINDS AS THEY HEADED TO CHICAGO:

GLORIA HAISLIP

Fancy Gap

Age: 66

Occupation: Retired; dabbles in real estate

Background: Chairwoman, Carroll County Democratic Party.

Previous conventions? Yes, this will be her second.

Goals? ``Network and find out what is really going on - other than what is reported by the media.''

Concerns? ``Democrats cannot do much unless they have control in the House of Representatives. ... I am very concerned about women and children and medical systems as they relate to women and how they are managed.''

DANA MARTIN

Roanoke County

Age: 50

Occupation: Insurance company executive

Background: Chairman, Roanoke County Democratic Party.

Previous conventions? None.

Goals? ``Study the sociology of political interaction at another level than that to which I have had previous exposure ... Explore the possibilities for business, personal and political networking ... Enjoy, to the greatest practical extent, various aspects of witnessing a part of history in the making.''

Concerns? ``The Democratic Party must not fall victim to its own hyperbole or be seduced by polls. I have great concern that the party must continue the course set by the so-called 'new Democrats' and resist the temptation to backslide into comfortable and familiar but losing behavior."

PAGE MATHERLY

Penhook

Age: 62

Occupation: Retired

Previous conventions? None.

Goals? ``To help build a real strong Democratic Party'' and ``get better acquainted with fellow Democrats.''

Concerns? ``To re-elect Bill Clinton'' and ``to win back the Hill.''

MICHAEL MAYS

Roanoke County

Occupation: Sheet metal worker

MARY LILY NUCKOLLS

Galax

Age: 56

Occupation: Office manager

Previous conventions? None.

Goals? ``I want to show the people of the 9th District and Grayson County that it is possible to work and make a difference in this rural area of Virginia. ... I want to meet and talk with our elected officials and get things for the 9th District and let the whole U.S.A. know where we are and how outstanding we are.''

Concerns? ``Apathy - people need to realize how important it is to register and vote and put educated, caring persons in office. Our country is at stake.''

HENRY TIELEMAN

Riner

Age: 63

Occupation: University professor

Previous conventions? None.

Goals? ``To become an informed grass-roots politician. Through small efforts at this level, large goals can be achieved.''

Concerns? ``I don't have any concerns. I am happy with the state of the Democratic Party. I am looking forward to the victory party on Nov. 5.''

MARIONETTE WIGGINS

Martinsville

Age: 67

Occupation: Secretary, semi-retired

Previous conventions? Yes, this will be her second.

Goals? ``It will be uplifting to be around compassionate Americans. It will renew my faith in people who care about `the least of us.'''

Concerns? "The conservatives are turning this country into a mean place where the underprivileged will be trampled on so the rich and powerful will be more so. Democrats cannot allow this to happen.''

LINDA WYATT

Roanoke

Age: 47.

Occupation: Teacher

Background: Member, Roanoke City Council.

Goals? ``My hope is that it's a real upbeat convention and that we have a real positive message to get out to the public.''

Previous conventions? No.

Concerns? ``My concerns are narrow-minded, small-minded people who take potshots at good ideas.'' She's concerned that Congress will remain in GOP hands, and "I think that ties the president's hands. I am so concerned that we are so busy trying to legislate what we think is appropriate adult behavior that we're going to make a whole lot of children seriously, seriously at risk, without a roof over their head and food on their table. I remember the days when children came to school hungry.''
