WRESTLING STANDOUT DIES AT AGE 49

Ron Childress, a prominent figure in Roanoke Valley wrestling, died Sunday at his home in Moneta of undisclosed causes. He was 49.

Childress was a standout wrestler at Northside High School under coach Ken Shelton and went on to compete at Appalachian State University. After graduating from the Boone, N.C., school, he returned to Roanoke to teach and coach at William Fleming High School.

Childress went on to coach at Breckenridge Junior High School, where his teams won numerous valley championships. His efforts were honored recently when he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

* The Blue Ridge Lightning under-15 boys' soccer team finished second at the Virginia Cup in Richmond.

Goalie Grant Soma led the way for the Lightning in victories over Arsenal FC of Dale City (7-1), Vista Highlanders of Fairfax (2-0) and the Richmond Strikers (3-1). The Lightning dropped a 4-0 decision to the Springfield Phoenix in Sunday's title game.
