VINTON WOMAN GETS 1 YEAR FOR ABUSE JUDGE SENTENCES HER TO 4 YEARS OF PROBATION

A Roanoke County circuit judge sentenced a Vinton woman, convicted of beating her infant daughter, to one year in jail Monday.

Katina Smith, 24, was taken into custody immediately after the hearing, according to Commonwealth's Attorney Skip Burkart.

In October, Smith was charged with beating her 2-month-old daughter. The girl was suffering from fractures to her ribs, wrists and right leg when Smith brought her to a hospital.

In March, Roanoke County Circuit Judge Robert Doherty convicted Smith of child neglect. She had told a detective that her daughter was uncomfortable from a recent hernia operation and was crying uncontrollably.

Monday, Doherty also sentenced Smith to four years of probation during which time she cannot have any infant in her care. Smith's 1-year old daughter lives with Smith's parents.

Smith also is not allowed to have any unsupervised contact with her daughter, Burkart said.
