TEEN DENIED BOND IN SLUMBER-PARTY KILLINGS CAPITAL MURDER, RAPE CHARGES FILED

A teen-ager accused of breaking into a neighbor's house during a slumber party, stabbing a girl to death and wounding three other teens was ordered jailed without bond Monday.

Curtis Lee White II, 19, is charged with capital murder and rape in the Friday morning rampage that shocked the quiet neighborhood of neat, middle-class houses. White did not speak during the 10-minute arraignment.

Judge Fred Creekmore of Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court cited the magnitude of the crimes in denying bail.

``Thank you, Jesus,'' Tammy Harper Stevenson whispered after Creekmore's ruling. Her niece, Michelle Harper, 17, was killed in the attack. Several other members of Michelle's family sobbed loudly.

``We came here today because we did not want to see him get bond,'' Stevenson said. ``We want him to pay for what he did to our baby.

``We do not have any hatred toward his family, because God does not put hatred in our hearts,'' she said, holding back tears. ``But my niece is gone. Her cousins are hurt. It just hurts.''

Other relatives declined to comment.

White was charged with capital murder, two counts of forcible sodomy, three counts of malicious wounding and one count each of abduction, rape, attempted rape and statutory burglary. If convicted of the murder charge, he could be sentenced to death.

The attack occurred at the home of two girls, ages 13 and 17, and the older girl's twin brother. Authorities declined to reveal their names because they are juveniles.

Their father was not home at the time. Neighbors said he is a single parent.

A neighbor, Elaine Person, said the older girl had dated White for several years. The Virginian-Pilot quoted neighbor Jay Carmack as saying White had recently learned from a friend that the girl planned to break up with him. The girl had been afraid to tell White of her plans to break up, Carmack told the newspaper.

Police said White broke into the house and told the three girls to remove their clothes. He sexually assaulted them and stabbed them with a kitchen knife, authorities said.

The brother of one of the girls was stabbed after he awoke and tried to help them, police said. The surviving teens were treated at a hospital and released.
