President:
Paul Torgersen
Torgersen, president for nearly three years, has spent the better part of his career at Virginia Tech, where he built the engineering college as its longtime dean. He spends much of his time now visiting legislators on behalf of the university, or lobbying alumni as he raises funds around the country.
"Although Virginia Tech is Virginia's leading research university, our primary thrust is teaching undergraduates," he said. Indeed, the university's leading researchers continue to teach undergraduate sections. That's what makes a place like Tech so exciting, he says.
"I continue to teach one or two courses a semester and find those days in the classroom the most rewarding of my job."
Torgersen's office is on the second floor of Burruss Hall, the "castle" centerpiece of the Tech campus. To call his office, dial 231-6231
Dean of Students:
Cathryn Goree
Goree, Tech's dean of students for nearly two years now, serves as the primary link between students, parents, faculty and the administration. Chief among her duties is handling programs such as disabled student services, multicultural programs and judicial affairs.
"I like the fact that the job is never the same from one day to the next," Goree said. "We deal with so many facets of student life that every call we get is different." To reach Goree, call 231-3787.
Chief of Police:
Mike Jones
Jones oversees one of 14 accredited university police departments in the nation. "Dealing with people would have to be the most interesting part of my job," he said. "Events like student check-in and football games represent a real challenge for us in how to facilitate up to 60,000 people."
The police station, behind Cassell Coliseum off Southgate Drive, is open 24 hours a day. To reach Jones, call 231-6183
