Real estate plan open for comment

The Virginia State Bar has published a proposed rule that would define a real estate closing as the practice of law. If approved, the rule would mean only licensed lawyers could conduct a closing.

The draft opinion by the bar's committee on the unauthorized practice of law is being circulated for public comment until Sept. 23. If approved by the Council of the Virginia State Bar, its ruling body, and the Virginia Supreme Court, it would become law, making moot similar bills pending from this year's General Assembly that are being studied by a legislative subcommittee.
