TECH WOMEN PLANNING OWN HAWAIIAN LUAU

Possible matchups with Stanford and Stephen F. Austin highlight the 1996-97 Virginia Tech women's basketball schedule.

In addition to its Atlantic 10 conference slate, the Hokies will play in the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov.29-Dec.1. The field also features Hawaii, Miami (Ohio), Pittsburgh, Houston and Michigan.

The Hokies will welcome a field of Loyola (Md.), Cornell and South Carolina in their own Diamond Club Classic on Dec.29-30. Tech opens the regular season Nov.22 against UNC-Greensboro at Cassell Coliseum.

In other sports news in the region:

* Mike Kelly, an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy the past two years, has joined the Virginia Tech basketball staff as an administrative assistant. Kelly, a 1993 graduate of St.Joseph's College in Portland, Maine, will monitor the academic progress of Tech basketball players and perform a number of office duties.

Kelly succeeds Greg Elliott, who resigned to take a teaching position in Hilton Head, S.C.
