ARNOLD, James Paul, 77, of Fries, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Fries Pentecostal Holiness Church. Arrangements by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax.

BOWYER, Harry Edward Sr., 82, of Route 2, Bedford, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996, at Oakwood Manor. He was born November 5, 1913 in Bedford County, a son of the late James Mitchell Bowyer and Floya Virginia Overstreet Bowyer. He was a retired farmer, and was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Josephine Mason Bowyer; two brothers, Howard A. Bowyer and Humphrey Bowyer; two sisters, Lettie B. Weeks and Lucy B. Smith. He is survived by two sons, Harry E. Bowyer Jr. and his wife, Sharon, Jackie Dale Bowyer and his special friend, Pat Carhart, all of Bedford; two sisters, Linda Carol Nicholas and her husband, Monty, of Rustburg, Lois Jean Vess and her husband, James, of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, James M. (Junior) Bowyer of Bedford; a sister, Charlotte Bowyer Bobblet of Baltimore, Md.; also seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside at Nicopolis United Methodist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, August 30, 1996, with the Rev. Earl Ragland officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home.

COLLINS, Alfred J., 74, of Christiansburg, died Monday, August 26, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday from the Richardson - Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert E. Crawford with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne in Christiansburg.

CONKLIN, Jennie Sumner, 80, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 27, 1996. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Frank T. and Evelyn Baumgardner Sumner. An active and long time member of Grace United Methodist Church, she served as the church secretary for fourteen years, was a past president of the United Methodist Women, and sang in the choir. A former member, she was a past president of the Little Acorn Garden Club. Surviving are her husband, Glen J. Conklin; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie Hill, Roanoke, and Pat and Bill Gaddy, Raleigh, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Bonnie Conklin, Rockhill, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Tony Smithers, Michael Smithers, Steven Wade, Lori Gaddy, Melanie Wooten, Aaron Conklin, and Holly Conklin; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Rae Wooten and Reagan Lee Wooten; sister, Frances Wells, Tucson, Ariz.; and niece, Linda Walker, Tucson, Ariz. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, for the elevator fund. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 30, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Emory N. FLOWERS, Edward Lee, 74, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 25, 1996. Survivors include one cousin, Katherine Harris, Lynchburg; devoted friend, Alex Thompson, Roanoke; a host of friends. Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. Corwin Casey officiating, with burial in Williams Memorial Park. HALE, Dorothy, 62, of York, Pa. formerly of Roanoke passed away August 27, 1996. Arrangenments by Serenity Funeral Home.

HART, Mary Kinney, 73, of 21 Old Meadow Dr., The Edgewood, Stanleytown, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. A native and lifelong resident of Bassett, she was an active church and civic leader in her community all her life. A member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church, she had served on the church's administrative board for 30 years, had chaired the Worship Committee, and was chairperson of the Missons Committee at her death. She also had served as president of the United Methodist Women. Hart initiated the Cub Scout Program for the Bassett area in the early 1950's and served as Den Mother for several years. She was chairperson of the Red Cross Bloodmobile for 12 years and was a longtime active member of the Bassett Garden Club. Born December 9, 1922, she was a daughter of the late William Niven Kinney Jr. and the late Mary Mills Kinney. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Richard Hart; and a brother, Clyde L. Kinney. Surviving are one daughter, Susan Hart Vincent, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, William Richard Hart, Fairfield, Ohio, Charles Nicholas Hart, Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters. The funeral will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Meredith officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville. HAYDEN, Kimberly Dianne (``Kim''), 29, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord and her father, Richard M. (``Dick'') Hayden, Tuesday, August 27, 1996. She was a graduate of Northside High School. Surviving are her mother, Jean Sink Hayden; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, August 30, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. J. HOLT, James J., ``Jim,'' 87, of Bent Mountain, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996 at his residence. Jim was a retired mechanic from Firestone Tire Company and is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Ethel Thorn Teel Holt, his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Ann and Thomas W. Beahen, Niagra Falls, N.Y.; his son and daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Jane Lynn Holt, Lewiston, N.Y.; grandchildren, Thomas Beahen Jr., Timothy J. Beahen, Martha B. Templeton, Lura K. Holt; four great-grandchildren; his sisters, Flossie Clingenpeel, Roanoke, Grace Bowman, Callaway, Essie Webster, Fallston, Md., Della Lipscombe, Richmond, Retha Hawley, Varina, N.C. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, Saturday, August 31, 1 p.m. with the Reverend Gary Edwards and the Reverend Horace Light officiating. KUHN, Mary Evelyn Hahn, 94, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday evening, August 27, 1996, at her residence. She was the widow of E. L. Kuhn and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mrs. Kuhn was very active in the church and for many years taught Sunday School in the Children's Department. She attended Juanita College in Pennsylvania and during her 40 year teaching career taught at the Belmont and Dublin Schools and served as principal of Christiansburg Primary School. She also was employed for a number of years at Mitchell Sales Company in Christiansburg. Surviving are one daughter, Louise Aylor, Chrisitiansburg; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Bland, Clarksburg, W.Va., and Mrs. Grace Holsopple, Scott Depot, W.Va.; and several nephews. The funeral will be 1 p.m., Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gerald A. Goss, Rev. Monroe Hedrick and Rev. Robert Crawford. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24073. KULIK, Richard Allen, 39, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996, in Montgomery County. Surviving are his wife, Connie Kulik; two sons, Philip Moher, Christiansburg, Richard Allen Moher, Florida; a daughter, Rochelle Kulik, New York. LEONARD, Harold William, (``Butter''), 84, of Christiansburg, died Monday, August 26, 1996, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. LEWIS, Crystal Claytor, 61, of Dublin, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996 at her home. She was born September 12, 1934 in Dublin, Va. to the late Charles Robert Hines and Virginia H. Nelson. Surviving include daughters, Vonetta D. Claytor, Dublin, Janet Miller, San Diego, Cal if., Renee' King, Laurel, Md., Teresa Gaye Claytor, San Diego, Calif.; sons, Keith ``Randy"" Claytor, Radford, Micheal Claytor, Powatan, Harold Claytor, Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters, Paulita Snell, Radford, Barbara Rollins, Radford, Annabelle Wyms, Radford, Lorene Wyms, Radford; a host of grandchildren; and great-grandchldren. LIADY, Fred Gardner, Jr. 83, died August 26, 1996 at the Colonnades, Charlottesville, VA. Born June 28, 1913 Coleinga, California. Son of the late Fred Liady Gardner and Theresa King Liady. He is survive by his wife Nancy Apperson Liady and a son Fred Liady Gardner, III of Roanoke; a daughter Anne Liady Lynch of Phoenix, Ariz., and six grandchildren. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and a Retired Mechanical Engineer with the Southern Welding and Machine Company of Charlottesville. The family suggest that donations be made to the Charlottesville Rescue Squad or the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends at the home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 Saturday, August 31 at the Hillsboro Baptist Church Cemetary, Yancey Mills, VA with the Rev. Peter Wade officiating. PAINTER, Marjorie Rachel Thomas, 77, of Catawba, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 1996, at her home. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Loren Thomas and Ronald Thomas. She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Painter; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandy and Carson Hamilton, Karen and Buck Taylor, Sheila Painter; three grandchildren, Shanna Taylor, Jessica Taylor, and Stephen Hamilton; two stepgrandsons, David Taylor and Joshua Taylor; two brothers, Claude Thomas and Ashby Thomas; seven sisters-in-law, Frances Thomas, Ruth Thomas, Helen Thomas, Helen Painter, Nellie Painter, Ola Painter, and Pauline Rhodes; two brothers-in-law, Eugene Rhodes and Melvin Painter; nine nieces and nephews.
