BANK'S FLA. LAWSUIT WON'T AFFECT VIRGINIA

First Union Corp.'s settlement of a Florida lawsuit over auto loan practices will have no impact on its banks in Virginia.

First Union agreed to return $24 million to 110,000 auto loan customers to settle a lawsuit alleging it had charged them improperly for excess insurance on loans dating from 1986.

First Union spokesman Jeep Bryant said Thursday the practice that was the subject of the suit was limited to a Florida bank that First Union acquired.
