LACK OF LIFEGUARDS MAY PUT EVERYBODY OUT OF THE POOL

Wanted: Certified lifeguards who won't mind getting paid for catching some rays. Apply Friday to the Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation. Report to work at city-owned pools Saturday, Sunday or Monday - or all three.

That's an advertisement the city more or less composed Thursday in issuing a public appeal for lifeguards so it can keep both city pools open for the entire Labor Day weekend.

Although the pools normally are open for the traditional end-of-summer weekend, most of the city's summer life-guarding staff has left for college this year.

Unless a significant number of people step forward, the Fallon Park pool in Southeast Roanoke and the Washington Park pool in Northwest will be closed during the three-day break, said Michelle Bono, the city's public information officer.

"We made it through last weekend, but we simply don't have the staff to keep both pools open this weekend and Labor Day," Bono said.

The city wants to keep both pools open from noon to 8 p.m. on all three days. If volunteers aren't found, the Fallon Park pool will be open only on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and the Washington Park pool will be open only on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Both will be closed on Monday.

Normally the city pays its guards $6 per hour. But Parks and Recreation is willing to pay $7.50 per hour for the holiday weekend, said Vic Garber, recreation superintendent.

Certified lifeguards who want to work should call the Parks and Recreation Department at 981-2236 as soon as possible.
