FORSTER STEPS FORWARD IN SHAWSVILLE VICTORY

Megan Forster poured in 35 points as Shawsville defeated Narrows 60-55 on Thursday night on the Shawnees' floor in the opener for both teams.

Forster also contributed six steals, five assists and six rebounds. She was 11-for-18 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Beth Burdette added 10 points and eight rebounds for Shawsville.

Narrows was led by Suzanne Webb's 24 points and eight rebounds.

In other games:

Rural Retreat 62, Fort Chiswell 41: In Rural Retreat, Kristie Osborne scored 13 points and Martha Crigger and Jane Grubb added 12 each as the Indians downed the Pioneers in a non-district game that served as each club's opener.

Mary Brewer collected 10 rebounds for Rural Retreat, which broke on top early and never was threatened.

Amber Gunter and Amy Coleman had 12 points each for the Pioneers.

Christiansburg 50, Giles 19: In Pearisburg, the Blue Demons took advantage of the Spartans' poor shooting in a 31-point rout.

Lisa Dalton scored 12 points and Amber Reed added 11 to lead Christiansburg (1-0).

Kristen White led Giles (0-1) with five points and nine rebounds.

Gretna 52, Laurel Park 50: In Gretna, Kristy Cruise converted a length-of-the-court pass by Twila Irvin into a layup just before the final buzzer to lift the Hawks over the Lancers in a non-district game that served as the opener for both schools.

Cruise's basket came just seconds after Laurel Park's Brandy Martin hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 50.

Cruise paced Gretna with 14 points, and Martin led the Lancers with 11.

Bassett 59, Chatham 41: Heather Miller scored 20 points to lead the Bengals to a season-opening, non-district victory.

Lashonda Clarke led Chatham with 10.

Floyd County Tip-Off

Patrick County 55, Blacksburg 40: Alison Brammer and Holly Weber each scored 10 points each to lead the Cougars past the Indians in Floyd.

Patrick County (1-0) plays Floyd County on Saturday; Blacksburg (0-1) faces Fieldale-Collinsville.

Casey Beamer led Blacksburg with 13 points.

Floyd County 91, Fieldale-Collinsville 40: The Buffaloes stampeded to a 36-point halftime lead on the way to a rout of the Cavaliers.

Julie Sowers scored 18 points and Amy Vest added 17 and made four 3-pointers for Floyd County (1-0), which plays Patrick County on Saturday. Sara Conner added 12.

Jennifer Witt scored 10 for Fieldale-Collinsville (0-1), which meets Blacksburg.

Craig County Tip-Off

Covington 65, Craig County 13: The Cougars forced 41 turnovers in mauling the Rockets in the first round in New Castle.

Joanne Helton scored 18 points for Covington (1-0), which plays Saturday against James River, a 45-43 loser to Parry McCluer.

Virginia High Tip-Off

Richlands 79, George Wythe 54: Kristi Bennett scored 28 points, and the Blue Tornado used a 12-2 run in the third quarter to break open a first-round game in Bristol.

Richlands hit 36 of 51 free throws. The Maroons made more field goals, 24-20.

Megan Johnson scored 10 for George Wythe (0-1), which plays Saturday against the host school.

Carroll County Tip-Off

Auburn 51, Grayson County 45: Laura Underwood had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles past the Blue Devils in Hillsville.

Auburn (1-0), which plays Bland tonight, broke open the game with its man-to-man defense in the second half. Anna Smith and Sarah Black each had five of the Eagles' 18 steals.

Mandy Smith and Lindsey Carico had 14 points each for Grayson County (0-1). Dana Whittington added 12.

Radford 68, Rocky Gap 39: The Bobcats started and ended with a flourish to defeat the Eagles in Hillsville.

Radford (1-0) was led by Jenny Greco's 14 points.

Rocky Gap (0-1) was led by Sara Boone, with nine points.

Carroll County 66, Bland 28: The Cavaliers jumped on the Rockets with a full-court man-to-man press that spurred them to the 38-point victory in Hillsville.

Angie Farmer led Carroll County (1-0) with 17 points. Chelsie Stoneman added 10 points and sixteen rebounds, and Tracey Leonard scored 12.

Kelly Dunn led Bland (0-1) nine points.

Lord Botetourt Tip-Off

Bath County 38, Liberty 32: Katie Hardbarger scored 18 points and hit four of six free throws in the final quarter as the Chargers downed the Minettes in the first round in Daleville.

Hardbarger had eight points in the first quarter to help Bath County (1-0) take the lead. The score remained close throughout the second half, but the Chargers used free throws to pull away at the end.

Sue Cowlbeck led Liberty (0-1) with nine points.

In the second game, Lord Botetourt began the defense of its 1995 Group AA title with a 67-43 victory over Jefferson Forest. The Cavaliers will meet Bath County tonight, following the 5 p.m. game between Jefferson Forest and Liberty.

Heritage Tip-Off

Magna Vista 63, Highland 27: Sandi Reid scored 14 points to lead the Warriors (1-0) to a victory over the Rams (0-1) in Lynchburg.

Reid scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half to spark Magna Vista to a 35-7 lead. Jennifer Taylor contributed 10 points.

Highland was led by Tammy Shifflett, who scored a game-high 18 points.

Nelson County defeated Heritage 32-30. Magna Vista will face Nelson County at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Heritage will play Highland at 11 a.m.

Fort Defiance Tip-Off

Fort Defiance 46, Rockbridge County 39: Carolee Doughty scored 14 points to lead the Indians past the Wildcats in Fort Defiance.

Rockbridge (0-1) plays Riverheads in the consolation at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Fort Defiance (1-0) plays Waynesboro in the final.
