ANDREWS, Mildred Bollinger, a longtime educator in the Giles County School System, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996 at Springfield Care Center in Linside, W. Va., where she received care for the past eight months. She has been a resident of Giles County since 1930. Mrs. Andrews was born in Hickory, N.C. on April 27, 1901 and was a daughter of the late Lester E. and Estelle Burch Bollinger. The family moved to Amelia County, Va. in 1903. Mildred was educated in Westhampton College, William and Mary and VPI & SU (M.S). She taught school in Emporia, Richmond, Powhatan and Amelia before coming to Giles County to teach in Narrows and Pearisburg. She kept in constant touch with her Latin, Math, English, History and Drama students. Mildred was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, New River Historical Society, she helped organize the Giles Historical Society in 1978, helped organize the Narrows Woman's Club and was a member of the Pearisburg Woman's Club. She was a member of the Creative Writing Group of Showalter Center, Blacksburg, Va., through which she published many articles. She took great interest in her church, the Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg. Mildred was married to Henry C. Joyner, an attorney in Southhampton County, Va., until his death in 1929. She was the widow of Judge John Summerfield Andrews, who died in 1953. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hermine Waldrop and Frankie Pendergast and by one niece, Barbra McLaughlin of North Carolina. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ruth B. Hicks of Richmond and Mrs. Lucille B. Hammer of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Blanche Powell officiating. ARNOLD, Joseph D. (Don), 58 of Clemmons, N.C., died Tuesday, August 27, 1996. Funeral service August 31, 1996 2 p.m. Arrangements by Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BELL, Margaret R., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 1996. She is survived by her husband, of 48 years, William G. Bell Jr., of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Bell and R. Don Chappell, Roanoke; son, William G. Bell III., Roanoke; three grandchildren, Laurie Ellen Nelson, Richmond, Elizabeth Anne Nelson, Roanoke, Karen Aylette Chappell, Blacksburg; two brothers, Joseph Francis McGowan Jr., O cean City, Md. and George Henry McGowan, Takoma Park, Md.; one sister, Patricia Knowlton, Oceanside, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. COONEY, John McKinley, 93, of 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, and formerly of Bedford, died Thursday, August 29, 1996, at Drinkard Health Center. He was born in Hempstead, N.Y. October 10, 1902, son of the late Richard Thomas Cooney and Matilda McKinley Cooney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Elizabeth Gentzsch Cooney. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bedford, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the Department of the Army, having served as Comptroller of the Army from 1934 to 1968, stationed at the Pentagon. He is survived by two sons, Michael A. Cooney of Frederick, Md. and Patrick J. Cooney of Long Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Kathleen (Kathy) C. Busch of High Point, N.C., Jeanne A. Wright and Geraldine L. Daniels, both of Long Beach; also 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 1996, at St. John's Episcopal Church. Entombment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the service. Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 314 N. GRAY, Nelle Martin, a resident of Waco, Texas, for 15 years, died Thursday, August 29, 1996, at the home of her daughter. Born on January 14, 1909, in Montgomery County, Va., she was a resident of both Salem and Roanoke, Va., until her husband's retirement from the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1967. She and her husband were residents of Tempe, Ariz., for 14 years before moving to Waco. Preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Huston Gray in 1989, and her son, Robert Huston Gray of California in 1992, she is survived by her daughter, Sue Gray Wolfe of Waco; a daughter-in-law, Frances Gray of Yucca Valley, Calif.; two grandsons, Michael Huston Gray of DeLand, Fla., and John Allen Haynes Jr. of Arlington, Texas; a granddaughter, Susan Haynes Tyrrell of Fredericksburg, Va.; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Martin Wimmer of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lucy Darden Martin Robertson of Roanoke, and a brother, George S. Martin of Charlotte, N.C. A life-long member of the Disciples of Christ Church, she was a member of Lakewood Christian Church during her years in Waco. The Rev. Leigh Bond and the Rev. David Spain of Lakewood Christian Church will officiate at her graveside service, assisted by Mr. Mitchell Parrish, a homebound ministry friend of many years. The graveside service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 1996. The family will be at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home to receive visitors from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 30. Memorials may be made to Lakewood Christian Church or Providence Hospice.

HALE, Dorothy M., 62, of York, Pa., formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Tuesday, August 27, 1996. She was born in Galax, Va., to the late Herbert Edwards and Love Mittanan. She was married to Henry Hale, who preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Tony Hale of Roanoke, Donnie Hale of Lynchburg and David Hale of York; a daughter, Carol Gunn of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, James Edwards of Tennessee, and two sisters, Scottie Reeves of Las Vegas, Nev., and Edith Thompson of Roanoke. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 1996, at Garden of Prayer #6, with Elder Malverse Simpson officiating. Interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park. HARRELL, Margaret Lee Wilbourne, 86, of Salem, died Thursday, August 29, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Lynwood and Carol Harrell, Walter and Loretta Harrell, Henry and Kathy Harrell, all of Salem, James and Ann Harrell, Craig Co.; three sisters, Edna Hall, Vinton, Thelma Allman and Gladys Pruitt, both of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Luvada Westmoreland of Shawsville, Melinda Bowers, Ellisto n, Adam Harrell and Raymond Harrell, both of Salem; one great-grandson, Hunter Westmoreland, Shawsville. JOHNSON, Douglas Earby, 62, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and formerly of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996. KUHN, Mary Evelyn Hahn, 94, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday evening, August 27, 1996, at her residence. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gerald A. Goss, Rev. Monroe Hedrick, and Rev. Robert Crawford. KULIK, Richard Allen, 39, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, August 27, 1996, in Montgomery County. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by Rev. J. P. Hale, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.

LIDDLE, Lannie Grey Jones, 95, of Glade St., Galax, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996, in Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born in Carroll County on January 9, 1901 to Cleve Jones and Sara Leona Bedsaul Jones. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Ray Liddle. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Robert L. Wyatt, Galax; a son, Gor don C. Liddle, Fries; a half brother, Kenneth Jones, Lynch Station; sister-in-law, Mildred Jones, Woodlawn; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Debbie Horton and her daughter, Bessie. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Vaughn-Guynn Chapel with interment to follow in the Gladeville Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Rhoades will officiate.

LOCKHART, Edith B., 84, of Covington, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at Loving Funeral Home Chapel.

MASON, Elinor, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, August 29, 1996, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. She was the daughter of the late James Porter and Lillian Martin Mason. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College in the class of 1931. She taught school for one year at Narrows and then attended business school. She worked for several years as a secretary in Richmond until going in nursing training at Banner Elk, N.C. She was a registered nurse and worked for several years at Southwestern State Hospital, Marion, and the former Bristol Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a life-long member of the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade. Her later years were spent in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Wright. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, David F. and Doll Mason, Gastonia, N.C.; and ten nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Louisa Mason Keister Oglesby, Susan Mason Wildasin, and Carolyn Mason; two brothers, Douglas French Mason and William Bernard Mason; a half brother, James Bernard Mason; a half sister, Josephine Bowen Mason; a nephews, David Mason Wildasin. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Old Glade Cemetery with the Rev. Timothy E. Bird officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Old Glade Cemetery or to a favorite charity of the donor's choice. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Williams Funeral Home, Chilhowie, is in charge of arrangements.

MATOS, Carlos Herminio, of Hampton, died Thursday, August 22, 1996. He was a Technical Sergeant serving in the United States Air Force and stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. He is survived by two sons, Carlos Herminio Matos II and Miguel Angel Matos. The two sons reside at 141 Cary Street in Salem with their mother, Nanette Law Matos. Funeral arrangements are pending.

NANCE, Robert Earl, 67, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 1996. He was born in Bedford County to the late James A. and Emma Jennings Nance. Robert retired from Hol land-Richards Vault Service. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Ann Johnson and Ms. Carolyn Nance of Roanoke; three sons, Robert Earl (Cora Ann) Nance Jr., James Edward (Finnell) Nance and Donald Richard Nance of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Virginia Glover and Mrs. Ola Mae (Spencer) Manns of Roanoke; three brothers, John (Dorothy) Nance of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Thomas (Constance) Nance and William Nance of Roanoke; a devoted friend, Andrea King of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park. POWELL, Gene W., 65, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, August 29, 1996 at his residence. Mr. Powell was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church and was retired from Southern States Cooperative. He was a supporter of Franklin County High School Sports. Surviving are his wife, Doris Greer Powell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Beth Powell, Gregory and Donna Powell, all of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Jessica, Christina, Clayton and Zachary Powell; one sister, Garnetta McMillian, Rocky Mount; three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law also survive. PRATT, Jessie Irene, 77, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, August 29, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by a special niece, Nadine Turner of Floyd, where she made her home for 26 years. She is also survived by two brothers, Hampton Pratt of Floyd and Alvis Pratt of Frederick, Md.; two sisters, Emogene Sier of Maryland and Goldie Pratt of Floyd; and several nieces and nephews. SHELTON, Alva Jerome, 72, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 1996, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. Born in West Virginia on July 18, 1924, he was a son of the late Kyle and Cynthia Hughes Shelton. He was a former employee of Roanoke Electric Steel, and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Dobbins Shelton; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, JoAnn and Roy Jones of Radford, Barbara Wells of Radford, Elsie and Raymond Nester of Radford, and Grit L. Shelton of Radford; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 31, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Minister Lyle Morton, Minister Eddie Callahan, and Minister Harold Morris officiating. STOUT, John Wesley, 73, born August 9, 1923 in Abingdon, Va., died Wednesday, August 28, 1996 in the Crawford-Long Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. after a sudden illness. John worked for over fifty years in the Furniture Industry, where he was well known and respected. His career began with Stanley Furniture, Stanleytown, Va., at the age of 16 during the construction of the original plant. He continued there until entering the Navy. During World War II, he was service in both the Atlantic and Pacific Campaigns on a destroyer, the U.S.S. Eberlee. After the service, he returned to Stanley Furniture and over 18 years, worked his way to the position of Plant Superintendent. In 1966 he came to Pulaski Furniture Corporation, Pulaski, Va., where he later became manager of their Dublin Plant, which he assisted in building . From 1973 to 1975 he managed a factory for Lea Industries in Waynesville, N.C.. He then returned as Plant Manager of Pulaski Furniture's Dublin Plant and in 1977 he joined Webb Furniture Enterprises in Galax, Va., where, at the time of his death, he was Senior Vice-President of Manufacturing. He was preceded in death by his parents, John James and Pearl Harless Stout and the mother of his children, Effie Spencer Stout. He is survived by his wife, Rosa Quesenberry Stout; one son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Mary Catherine Stout of Dublin, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and John Makriyianis of Chester, Va.; one stepson, Deon Smith of Christiansburg; and one stepdaughter and spouse, Peggy and Richard Phillips of Radford, Va. His grandchildren are John Wesley Stout II of Columbia, S.C. and special g granddaughter, Andrea Makriyianis of Chester, Va. Stepgrandchildren are Marc and Judy Childress of New York, N.Y., Michael Children of New York, N.Y. Amanda and Scott Allen of Columbia, S.C., Chris Smith of Provo, Utah and Jason Phillips of Radford, Va.; also two sisters, Genett Smith and Mary Craig; and four brothers, Edgar, Charlie, Robert and Stewart Stout, all of Bassett, Va. During his lifetime, Mr. Stout was involved with a number of civic and service organizations, the Ruritans and the Lions, Elks, Moose Lodge and the Woodmen of the World. He was a member of Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115. Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville, Va. The service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. the Hillsville Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. William Gunter officiating. A graveside service will be held in Bassett, Va. at the Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery at 2 p.m., with the Rev. R. D. Ray officiating. WEISEL, Margaret Wright ``Peg,'' 75, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, August 28, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A native of Lansdale, Penn. she had resided in Roanoke for the past thirty years. She was a member and former deacon of the Covenant Presbyterian Church and was one of the first volunteers working with Community Hospital. She continued her service for twenty eight years during which time she served as President of the volunteers. Survivors include her husband of fifty-two years, Winfred M. Weisel; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Betty Weisel, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and David Guthrie, Cary, N.C., Jane and Gene D'Orazio, Mansfield, Texas, Elizabeth and Glen Hodges, Glade Hill; four grandchildren, Scott and Robyn Guthrie, Christopher and Bennett Weisel; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Dr. R. Robert Starr, Denver, Colo. A private graveside service will be held Saturday, August 31, 1996 followed by a memorial service at noon at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Robert and Dusty Fielder officiating and the Reverend John Roark assisting. WRIGHT, Walter Jr., (``Wuzzy)'', died Wednesday, August 28, 1996, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Savannah Wright, Elliston; two stepdaughters, Constance Laverne Lamar and Patricia Elaine Wilson, both of Roanoke; two stepsons, Alfred Harvey, Roanoke, and George Darnell Harvey Jr., Alabama; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Kenneth and Karen Wright, Elliston; two sisters and one brother-law, Geneva and William Johnson, Roanoke, and Frances Morgan, Roanoke; four sisters-in-law, Betty Branson and husband, Richard, Salem, Rowena Weatherspoon, Texas, Margaret Neal and husband, Eddie, Detroit, Mich., Shirley Johnson, Alabama; brothers-in-law, Armstead Jackson and wife, Peggy, Tacoma, Wash., Robert Jackson, Washington, D.C.; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one godchild, Stacey Carter; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends. Funeral services 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Elliston, with the Rev. David Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to First Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Friday, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, give donations to First Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
