Lord Botetourt's Sara Moore eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as the Cavaliers cruised to a 67-43 victory over Jefferson Forest on Thursday night in the first round of Botetourt's tip-off tournament in Daleville.
Moore became the fourth girls' player in school history to reach the milestone, following teammate Sarah Hicks who passed that plateau last season. Moore finished with 18 points and eight rebounds Thursday night, and Hicks had 26 points and 10 rebounds for Lord Botetourt (1-0).
Jefferson Forest (0-1) was led by Melinda Minnick's 10 points.
In today's second round, Botetourt plays Bath County, a 38-32 winner over Liberty. Jefferson Forest meets Liberty in the first game at 5 p.m.
In other games:
Salem 52, R.E. Lee-Staunton 44: Sara Palmer scored 15 points to lead the Spartans to a season-opening victory in Staunton.
Salem used an 11-2 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to open a 41-28 lead. Lee got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Erin Collins scored 12 points for Salem. Katrina Lassiter led Lee with 14.
Craig County Tip-Off
Covington 65, Craig County 13: The Cougars forced 41 turnovers in mauling the Rockets in the first round in New Castle.
Joanne Helton scored 18 points for Covington (1-0), which plays Saturday against James River, a 45-43 loser to Parry McCluer.
