Bankruptcies

Three bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke. One of them is a personal bankruptcy that the court listed as a business because it has commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.

James Coulter Hancock of Daleville filed for business reorganization and protection from creditors. Hancock, who is a real estate developer, also asked the court to set aside a 1994 contract with a North Carolina corporation for sale of six acres of land on U.S. 220 at Interstate 81. He estimated assets at more than $500,000 and liabilities at more than $1 million.

Barry Kirk Goodwin of Covington filed for business reorganization and protection from creditors. The case was filed earlier in Harrisonburg and transferred this week to Roanoke because most creditors and witnesses live here. Goodwin is a farmer and consultant with an interest in coal companies. He listed assets of $338,489 and liabilities of $1,048,141.

Erick Arthur Moore and Georganna Marie Moore of Ferrum filed for liquidation with assets of $23,261 and liabilities of $46,911. Erick Moore is a political and environmental consultant.

Norman store to close Tuesday

Monday will be the final day of business for the John Norman clothing store at Valley View Mall. The closing was announced in July, but without a firm date. The John Norman stores at Tanglewood and Towers malls will remain in business.

Jeff Wendell, owner of the chain, said many people who became customers at the Valley View store had started shopping at Tanglewood Mall instead.
