Norfolk Southern Corp. has installed automatic signals at railway-highway grade crossings at sites in Roanoke and Montgomery County.
The signals, designed to warn motorists of approaching trains, have been installed at a crossing on Albemarle Avenue in Roanoke and another on Virginia 822 in Shawsville.
The Roanoke signal cost $115,400 and the one in Shawsville, $96,700, NS said. The federal government pays 80 percent of the cost of signal installation with the state and the railroad paying for the rest.
The maintenance costs for crossing signals average $2,600 annually. Virginia shares the cost of signal maintenance with the railroad.
