Man gets life in murder of boy, 13
FAIRFAX - A jury recommended a life sentence Friday for an ex-convict convicted of stabbing a 13-year-old boy to death with a screwdriver.
James ``Buck'' Murray, 44, was convicted Thursday of killing Jonathan Hall.
A 16-year-old, Jason Garrison, is accused of helping Murray stab Hall to death. The boy was stabbed more than 60 times with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
A police diver found Hall's body in an iced-over pond Dec. 28, 12 days after his family reported him missing.
Murray has spent more than half his life in prison. He was convicted of slitting a man's throat, and once in prison he killed another inmate. He was on parole when he killed Jonathan.
Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. said Murray killed Jonathan because he feared the boy might turned Garrison in to authorities. Garrison had run away from a court-ordered drug and alcohol treatment program.

Game warden cleared in shooting
BRISTOL - Two state investigations have cleared a game warden in the shooting of a Russell County man in November 1994.
Lt. W.D. Rose of the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries shot and wounded Donald Osborne Sr. when he was confronted by Osborne and his son at the Osborne family farm.
Investigations by the game department and the state police cleared Rose.
The Osbornes were charged with attempted capital murder and attempting to abduct a law enforcement officer. Those charges were dismissed in March 1995 when a judge ruled there was no evidence to prove the Osbornes intended to kill or abduct Rose.
The elder Osborne was convicted in July 1995 of attempting to impede a law enforcement officer, a misdemeanor.

Gas leak closes National Airport
WASHINGTON - A gas leak forced the evacuation of Washington National Airport on Friday night as thousands of people were starting Labor Day weekend trips.
One woman was taken to a hospital for breathing problems.
Thirty to 40 flights were affected when authorities evacuated the main terminal and control tower around 9:10 p.m., airport spokeswoman Tara Hamilton said.
The airport was reopened two hours later after Washington Gas crews shut off all gas feeding the facility and searched the main terminal for dangerous gas pockets.
Washington Gas spokeswoman Lynn Scruggs said a bus struck a gas line that runs along a tunnel under the main terminal.

The bodies of Cynthia Johnson, 34, and her 7-year-old daughter, Heather, were found in the home early Thursday.

Fire officials said that at least seven separate fires had been set in the south Richmond home. Police said they were treating the deaths as a double homicide.
