Beyer to speak at Roanoke church

Virginia Lt. Gov. Don Beyer of Richmond will address the first seasonal meeting of the interfaith Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference on Sept. 13 at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave. S.W. Beyer's talk will follow a 12:30 p.m. luncheon. Reservations will be taken until Sept. 10; call the Rev. Dr. John Sylvester-Johnson at 343-7227 for the $6.50 meal. Theme of the meeting is "The Future of the Faith Community." The conference, which meets monthly, is open to religion professionals, both ordained and lay.

Brethren leader comes to Southwest Virginia

The Rev. Dr. David Radcliff, a member of the national staff of the Church of the Brethren, based in Elgin, Ill., will lead a conference, "Transitions," Oct. 27-29 at Williamson Road Church of the Brethren, 3110 Pioneer Road N.W. Radcliff, who was reared in the Roanoke Valley and is a former pastor of Blue Ridge Church of the Brethren, will discuss the church's role in ethical issues of marriage and divorce, end-of-life decisions and pastoral changes in congregational life. Sessions will begin Sunday morning at 11 with evening times at 7. Talk-back sessions will be part of the Sunday and Tuesday night programs with refreshments on those nights.

Evangelist to lead services

The Rev. Rick Via, a former pastor of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church at Blue Ridge and now a full-time evangelist, will lead revival services Sept. 8 through 10 nightly at 7:15 at the Franklin County High School auditorium in Rocky Mount. William and April Brown will be music leaders. This Franklin County Evangelistic Crusade is sponsored by the Franklin County Baptist Association.

Zuni Center to convert dormitories

Presbyterian Home and Family Services, Inc., a ministry of Virginia Presbyterian Churches (U.S.A.), is converting its dormitories at the Zuni Center in Southhampton County to cottages in which mentally retarded adults can experience a more homelike environment. Two cottages are expected to be open for occupancy in October with two more in March 1997. A fifth cottage is being converted at the Lynchburg headquarters to a home for four adults who can do their own housekeeping and hold simple jobs.

Diocese of Richmond distributes $75,000

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond is distributing $75,000, which members donated to assist congregations whose churches have been burned during the past year by arsonists. Among the recipients is the Glorious Church of God in Christ in Richmond which is trying to restore a 90-year-old stone building worth $400,000 which was torched by an arsonist in February. It received $25,000.
