AND THE WINNERS ARE...

Well, it seems you folks in the New River Valley had a pretty good time this summer.

We asked you to share your favorite photos from your summer vacation - and we got a basketful of them.

Kids and cows, mountains and distant castles, and those ever-popular seashore scenes came spilling out of your envelopes. Some of you vacationed at home, some nearby, and others traveled to the other side of the world.

The three winners in the "VACATION '96" contest (which appear on the cover of today's Current) include a reader's photograph of play in the backyard pool, a night scene of a popular beach town, and a child's unabashed backside as she samples the California surf.

We found that our readers are well traveled, although all the 10 finalists took their photos within the United States.

Suzy Klagge of Blacksburg, Robin Willis of Shawsville, and Tim Dean of Radford were the top winners. Each will receive a $100 prize.

Klagge's photo shows her small niece about to get hit by the surf at a southern California beach, where clothes are optional if you're young enough.

Tim Dean made a double exposure to capture the moon rising over Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Robin Willis captured her 10-year-old son as he carried his little sister Kelsey, 6, across the backyard pool ... looking like a shy damsel being rescued by her hero.

We've also included seven honorable mention winners (displayed on these pages), who each received a $20 prize.
