Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Gary W. Burris has departed on a six-month deployment aboard the fast combat support ship U.S.S. Supply. Burris' ship is part of the U.S.S. Enterprise Battle Group.
Burris graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1984 and joined the Navy in September 1991. He is the son of Marvin and Mary Burris of Pulaski.
Marine 1st Lt. Christian D. Harshberger recently completed his first solo flight. Harshberger is undergoing primary flight training with Helicopter Training Squadron Eight at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Fla.
Harshberger graduated from Radford High School in 1988 and joined the Marine Corps in December 1992. He received a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in 1992.
Marine Cpl. Michael C. Daley has departed for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. He departed from Norfolk. Daley joined the Marine Corps in March 1995. He is the son of David M. Daley of Pilot.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher L. Gravley has reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S Theodore Roosevelt, which is home ported in Norfolk. Gravley is a 1994 graduate of Pulaski County High School and joined the Navy in June 1994. He is the son of Debra and James Gravley Jr. of Dublin.
Airman 1st Class Shawn B. Harris has graduated from Phase I radiologic apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Harris now is participating in Phase II of the course. He is stationed at the Air Force Medical Training Center at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton.
Harris graduated from Floyd High School in 1995. He is the son of E. Fredward and Freeda Harris of Willis.
Elvis L. Mabry has graduated from leadership training and evaluation at the U.S. Army Cadet Command ROTC advanced camp at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. Cadets who are between their third and fourth years of college attend the camp, which provides a thorough evaluation of a cadet's decision-making ability. Mabry is a student at Syracuse University. Completion of the advanced camp and graduation from college results in a commission as a second lieutenant.
He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1987. He is the son of Beatrice Mabry of Dublin.
Marine Capt. Tony L. Howard, formerly of Radford, was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. The award recognizes Howard's professional achievement and superior performance of his duties as operations planner, flight duty officer and transport plane commander for Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 between October 1993 and May 1995.
Howard graduated from Radford High School in 1982 and received a bachelor's degree in statistics from Radford University. He also is a graduate of the Navy Flight School at the Pensacola Naval Air Training Command.
Howard lives in Havelock, N.C., with his wife. He is the son of Harry M. Howard of Christiansburg and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry T. Howard of Radford.
Senior Airman George E. Armes has graduated from the airman leadership school at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, N.M. Armes is a laboratory journeyman. Armes graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1988. He is the son of George and Angelina Armes of Pulaski.
Tech. Sgt. Jack B. Church of Pound has been assigned to the U.S. Air Force Recruiting Office in the Market Place shopping center in Christiansburg. Church is a recent graduate of the Air Force Recruiting School, where he trained in various areas including airman classification system, testing and enlistment processing procedures. Prior to his current assignment, Church was stationed at Detachment 550, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., as a personnel technician.
Pvt. Jeffery L. La Vere Jr. of Christiansburg has completed training program at Fort Jackson, S.C. He now is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, assigned to a military police battalion. La Vere graduated from Christiansburg High School in February 1996 and joined the Army that month. He is the son of Skip and Majken Mathis of Christiansburg.
