NAMES ON CAMPUS

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE New River Community College has received a $3,000 grant from the state Department of Forestry for a forestry information project. The money, from the federal government's urban and community forestry program, will be used to provide training for NRCC staff in maintaining trees and other vegetation at the college's 100-acre campus in Dublin.

The NRCC Learning Resources Center also will obtain additional books and other materials related to forestry to add to its collection. These materials will be available for use to anyone in the community. RADFORD UNIVERSITY

Jan G. Clarke has been named director of planned giving at Radford University. Clarke previously developed, implemented and directed a planned giving program at Averett College for nine years. He received his bachelor's degree in management in 1982 from Averett.

Jeanne Johnson, a public relations coordinator at Radford, received an award in the National Federation of Press Women annual communications contest. Johnson took third place in the four-color brochure category for "Energizing the Arts," a promotional brochure and calendar for the university's College of Visual and Performing Arts. Johnson won honorable mention in the media kit category for a package of widely published parenting stories featuring Radford professors.

David W. Kraus recently was named Radford University's new director of admissions. Kraus previously was admissions director at the University of New Hampshire for four years. He also served as assistant and associate director of admissions at New Hampshire. In addition, during his tenure he received the New England Association of College Admissions Counselors' Outstanding Admissions Professional award. Kraus received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of New Hampshire.

Gary Ellerman, an educational studies professor at Radford, was appointed the university's interim director of continuing education in July. He will be responsible for all efforts in continuing education and outreach. He succeeds Peter Balsamo, who retired from the university in March.

Ellerman, on the faculty since 1974, served for 12 years as assistant dean of the College of Education and Human Development and has served as acting dean of the college twice. He also has served as chairman of the Strategic Planning Task Force to help develop a plan for the College of Graduate and Extended Education in 1995-96.

Carl Stockton, chairman of Radford University's physical and health education department was selected as College of Health Teacher of the Year 1996 by the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He will be recognized at the association's convention in November, where he will lead a workshop on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Stockton has been at Radford since 1992. He currently is the association's vice president for health. He also edits the association's journal.

Martin Aylesworth has been named assistant to the vice president for academic affairs at Radford. Aylesworth has been at the university since 1983 and most recently served as associate dean of the College of Education and Human Development. VIRGINIA TECH

Two public relations women at Virginia Tech have received awards in the annual communications contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women. Lynn Nystrom, director of news and external relations for the College of Engineering, won first place for caption writing for the college's annual report, "Engineering Now." Others who were contributors to the report include Elizabeth Crumbley, Barbara Corbett, Pat White, Rick Griffiths and Bob Veltri.

Nystrom also took third place for her work as faculty advisor of the student newspaper, the Collegiate Times. She has been advisor of the paper since 1978. She also was a Virginia Press Women's nominee for the National Federation of Press Women's Communicator of the Year Award.

Clara B. Cox, manager of public service communications, received first place for editing the nonprofit "Virginia Issues & Answers." Other members of the magazine staff are Larry Hincker, Meg Nugent, Harry Yeatts Jr., Veltri and Griffiths.

Dianna Benton joined the YMCA Student Programs at Virginia Tech as a new assistant director in June. Benton will advise nine of YMCA's student programs. She will advise leaders of these programs as they learn from leading community-service and social-issue programs. Benton is a 1993 Tech graduate.
