ATKINSON, Forrest Bryant, 79, of Route 1, Vinton, passed away Saturday, August 31, 1996, in a local hospital. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and was a retired superintendent in the construction business. He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Ann Atkinson. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Anderson Atkinson; son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. (``Bob"") Atkinson and Marilyn Marks of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandson, Whitney Beecher Atkinson, and two sisters, Zona A. St. Clair of Vinton and Genice A. Foster of Route 1, Thaxton. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 1996, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel, with the Rev. Andy Rice and the Rev. Bobby Harris officiating. BEATTY, Ralph H., 74, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 31, 1996. He retired from Norfolk & Western Railway with 42 years of service, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Margaret L. Beatty; daughter and son-in law, Brenda B. and Ric k Jennings; two granddaughters, Melissa M. Jennings and Ashley L. Jennings; one sister, Arlene Moore; two brothers, Alfred M. Beatty and J. Preston Beatty, and several nieces and nephews. CECIL, Kelly Lee, 75, of Rt. 1, Patrick Springs, died Saturday, August 31, 1996, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry Co. He was born in Wyoming County, W.Va., September 23, 1920, son of the late James Archie Cecil and the late Mary Harmon Cecil and had been a resident of Patrick County since 1938. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the American Legion Post #0011 and was retired from DuPont Company in Martinsville. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Doris Cooper Cecil of the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart; three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Janice) Wyatt of Rt. 1, Patrick Springs, Mrs. Junior (Ramona) Cassady of Spencer, Rose C. Howell of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Kelly Dale Cecil and Carolyn H. Mrs. Duncan was born in West Virginia on Ma y 10, 1918 and was the daughter of the late John S. and Bessie Virginia Conley Palmer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Henry Duncan and a daughter, Dianna Lorene Duncan and three grand-children. She was a member of The Cedar Grove Church of Christ. HICKMAN, Doris Ginger 75, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, August 31, 1996 at Elizabeth Hardy Home Care. Born in Rockbridge Co., Va, July 20, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Burks Ginger and Sally McCullough Ginger. Mrs. Hickman was a member of Beth Horan United Methodist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband: Jesse D. Hickman. HITE, Hansford Clinton, 75, of Vesuvius, died Friday, August 30, 1996, at his home. Mr. Hite was born September 12, 1920, in Vesuvius, a son of the late Emmett Hansford Hite and Viola Humphries Hite. He was a life-long member of Emory United Methodist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Vesuvius Ruritan Club. He retired from Charles Barger and Son of Lexington in 1983 after 28 years as Service Manager. He was preceded in death by two sons, Hansford Wayne Hite and Douglas Guy Hite; one sister, Margaret Hamilton, and one brother, S. N. Hite. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Greene Hite, whom he married on September 12, 1940; a son and daughter-in-law, Justin (``Jay"") and Fran Hite of Weyers Cave; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol H. and John Harlow of Rockbridge Baths; two daughters-in-law, Rebecca C. Hite of Vesuvius and Patricia Hite of Buena Vista, and one sister, Mary Edna Hutchens of Steeles Tavern. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Bradley W. Hite, whom he raised, David W. Harlow, Andrew Hansford Hite, Melissa Hite Tomlin, Jeffrey Guy Hite, Derrick Douglas Hite and Anya Dibrel Hite; seven great-grandchildren, and five stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, September 2, 1996, at Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Gunsalas and the Rev. Daniel Stanley officiating. KESLER, Sarah Thomas, 76, of Ashland, wife of the Rev. R. Harris Kesler, died Saturday, August 31, 1996. Mrs. Kesler was a native of Oxford, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Dr. William Nelson Thomas and Estelle Bullock Thomas. She was educated in the public schools of Oxford and attended the Marjorie Webster School in Washington, D.C. She was a graduate of Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C. She was married to Dr. Kesler on September 10, 1946. After a stay in New York while her husband was in graduate school, she and Dr. Kesler returned to Virginia where he was a clergy member of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. In each of the communities where she lived, Mrs. Kesler was actively involved in the religious, civic and social life of the area. Dr. Kesler's appointments took them to the following churches and communities in Virginia: the McKenney Charge in McKenney, Main Street Church in Emporia, Duncan Memorial in Ashland, Main Street Church in Suffolk, Asbury Church in Harrisonburg, Epworth Church in Norfolk, Main Street Church in Waynesboro and First Church in Salem. In 1984, Dr. Kesler retired, and he and Mrs. Kesler moved to Ashland to a home they had purchased there. At the time of her death, Mrs. Kesler was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, the Woman's Club of Ashland, the Ashland Garden Club, the Hanover Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Scotchtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Jamestowne Society. She and her husband were vitally interested in Randolph-Macon College and were active in many of its affairs. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kesler is survived by five nieces, Sallie Thomas Carmichael of Gainesville, Ga., Douglas Thomas Odom of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mary Thomas Firestone of Lafayette, Ind., Sandra Kesler Walker of Virginia Beach and Barbara Kesler Dudley of Arvada, Colo.; her sister-in-law, Rachel Poe Thomas of Oxford, N.C.; an aunt, Mrs. Charles Goff of Virginia Beach; several great-nieces and great-nephews, and a number of cousins. A memorial service will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Ashland, at 2 p.m. Monday, September 2, 1996. The family suggests that memorials take the form of gifts to Randolph-Macon College or a charity of choice. Interment of ashes will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Oxford, N.C. The family will receive friends at the Kesler home in Ashland. The Reid Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

SHIVLEY, Billy Mitchell, 44, of Route 4, Old Oak Level Road, Bassett, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 30, 1996, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. Born in Franklin County on October 6, 1951, he was a son of Mattie Scott Cobbler of the home, and the late Alvin J. Shivley. He was self employed in lawn care maintenance, and attended Vision Assembly of God in Collinsville. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Lawson Shivley. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a daughter, Mrs. Frankie (Reginia) Barger of Pittsville; a son, Dwayne Shivley of Franklin County; eight brothers, Broaddus Wayne (Barbara Jean) Shivley of Rocky Mount, Naaman (Shirley) and Buren Lewis (Irene) Shivley of Martinsville, A. J. (Barbara) Shivley Jr., Jesse K. (Brenda) Shivley and Jeff Edward Shivley of Ferrum, Joe D. Shivley of Henry and Tommy Shivley of Bassett, and two sisters, Mrs. Lester (Frances) Maxey and Mrs. Ronnie (Chris S.) Woods of Ferrum. SIMMONS, Annie Beckner 90, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, August 30, 1996. She was born in Floyd County, VA and was a resident of Roanoke most of her life. She was an active member of Poages Mill Church of the Brethren for many years and has been a member of West Salem Baptist Church, Salem for the past several years. She was employed by Heironimus Department Store in Roanoke and later she and her husband owned and managed Simmons' Shoes on Williamson Road until their retirement. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Simmons, Sr.; one daughter and son-in-law, Legora Taylor-Wimett and Hal ""Grant"" Wimett. Atlanta, Ga; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Margaret Nienke, Charlotte, N.C.; Wayne and Nell Nienke, Roanoke; a stepson and his wife, Kenneth L. Jr and Phyllis Simmons.
