Scholarship awarded

PULASKI - Nathan Brown, son of Robert and Karen Brown of Pulaski, has won a $20,000 science and technology scholarship from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to study electrical engineering at the University of Virginia.

The Pulaski County High School graduate is among 240 first-year college and university students benefiting from the Competitive Edge Scholarship Fund this year. It is funded by Wal-Mart and selected vendor partners including Virginia's Bowman Apple. It supports college students pursuing careers in science and technology.

The late Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, established the program in 1992 "because he believed that education was the most important factor in keeping American industry, manufacturing and technology strong in the global marketplace," said David Glass, Wal-Mart president and chief executive officer. A percentage of the sales of SAM'S American Choice Applesauce and Bowman Apple Juice goes toward the scholarship fund.

Further information on the scholarship is available from Keely Beene, Community Programs, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., 702 Southwest 8th St., Bentonville, Ariz. 72716-9002.

Ginseng collection

Ginseng collection is authorized on national forest lands in Virginia from Sept. 15 to Dec. 31. Locally, gathering is allowed in the Jefferson National Forest.

Ginseng collection permit fees have increased $7 due to the higher wholesale prices from which the fee is established. The fee is now $20 per pound with a required two pound minimum purchase.

Law enforcement officers check permits and collections during the digging season.

Permits to cut firewood will be offered at $5 per cord with a minimum purchase of three cords required. Six cords is the annual limit.

Specific information and permits for these and other forest products are available from District Ranger offices. For more information, call David Olson at 265-6054.

Group vocal lessons

BLACKSBURG - The Wilderness Road Chorus is offering a six-week program of free group vocal lessons beginning Sept. 10, at 7:00 p.m. at the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department. There is a $10 fee for materials.

The chorus, an affiliate of Sweet Adelines International, is an all-female group singing four-part barbershop harmony without musical accompaniment. The singers perform around the New River Valley throughout the year. John Howell is the director.

To register for the lessons, call Cathy Jacobs at 951-5078.
