A MILESTONE SEASON SET IN THE NFL

RECORDS WERE MADE to be broken, and plenty should fall this season.

NFL milestones for 1996:

The Chicago Bears need nine regular-season victories to become the first NFL franchise to reach 600.

The Dallas Cowboys can become the first team to win four Super Bowls in a five-season span.

Miami's Dan Marino needs 1,159 passing yards to become the first player in NFL history to reach 50,000.

Minnesota's Warren Moon needs 2,823 passing yards and Denver's John Elway 3,294 to reach 45,000 career yards. The only two passers in NFL history already there are Marino (48,841) and Fran Tarkenton (47,003).

San Francisco's Jerry Rice needs 58 catches to become the first player in NFL history to reach 1,000.

Rice also needs 877 receiving yards to become the first player in NFL history to reach 16,000.

Washington's Henry Ellard needs 28 receptions to pass Charlie Joiner and move into fifth place on the NFL's all-time receiving list. Joiner has 750 catches, Ellard 723.

Kansas City's Marcus Allen needs 18 catches to become the NFL's all-time leading receiver among running backs. Allen has 549 catches in 14 seasons, trailing only Roger Craig (566).

Minnesota's Cris Carter needs 17 receptions to pass Steve Jordan and become the Vikings' all-time leader. Jordan has 498 catches, Carter 482.

Detroit's Brett Perriman needs three catches to pass Charlie Sanders and become the Lions' all-time leader. Sanders has 336, Perriman 334.

Detroit's Herman Moore needs 325 yards to pass Gail Cogdill and become the Lions' all-time leader. Cogdill has 5,220, Moore 4,896.

Kansas City's Marcus Allen needs two touchdowns to move into second place in NFL history with 127. He is tied with Walter Payton for third with 125, one behind Jim Brown.

Emmitt Smith of the Cowboys needs 15 rushing touchdowns to become the NFL's all-time leader with 111. Smith has 95, trailing Walter Payton (110), Jim Brown (106), John Riggins (104) and Marcus Allen (103).

Buffalo's Thurman Thomas needs 455 yards rushing to pass O.J. Simpson and become the Bills' all-time leading rusher. Simpson has 10,183 yards, Thomas 9,729.

Former college teammates Barry Sanders (Detroit) and Thurman Thomas (Buffalo) can become the first players in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in eight consecutive seasons. Sanders and Thomas played collegiately at Oklahoma State.

Nick Lowery of the New York Jets needs eight field goals to pass Jan Stenerud and become the NFL's all-time leader. Stenerud has 373 field goals, Lowery 366.

Lowery also needs 66 points to pass Stenerud and become the NFL's No. 2 all-time scorer. George Blanda has 2,002 points, Stenerud 1,699 and Lowery 1,634.

Defensive ends Bruce Smith of Buffalo and Richard Dent of Indianapolis each needs 6 1/2 sacks to pass Lawrence Taylor and move into second place on the all-time sack list. Taylor has 132 1/2, Smith and Dent 126 1/2 apiece. Reggie White is the all-time leader with 157.
