FIRE DAMAGES SEAFOOD PLANT

Fire engulfed several buildings at the Neptune Fisheries Inc. plant early Sunday, destroying the company's offices as well as storage, machine repair, seafood processing and packaging buildings.

No one was at the plant and no firefighters were injured, Newport News Fire Marshal R.L. Ware Jr. said.

Firefighters saved a large freezer warehouse with an estimated $10 million worth of seafood in it, but the seafood was in danger of thawing because of a loss of power.

Ware said there was no immediate estimate on how much damage the fire caused.

Firefighters were called to the plant just after 3 a.m., Ware said. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
