VMI CONSOLED IN SOCCER VICTORY

Phillip Harper, Max Krumpe and Kenny Sykes scored goals Sunday as VMI downed Iona 3-1 in the consolation game of the Chase Manhattan Mortgage Mount Soccer Classic in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Keydets (1-1), down one at the half, took control in the second while outshooting the Gaels 27-12.

In other sports news in the region:

* Rodney Jones and Chris Padgett scored goals as East Carolina topped Virginia Tech 2-1 in men's soccer.

Mark Ludwig tallied for Tech (1-1). Alexey Salmin made four saves for the Hokies.

* Mike Ginsburg scored as Radford men's soccer tied Marshall 1-1 in Huntington, W.Va.
