Cakes needed

PULASKI - Cakes are needed to help celebrate the 100th birthday of the Old Pulaski County Courthouse as part of Count Pulaski Day Oct. 5.

The Citizens' Courthouses Exhibits Committee has invited groups such as county churches, schools, civic organizations, Extension and garden clubs to bring a cake to the festivities. Participants should call the county's administrative office at 980-7705 by Sept. 15 to reserve a cake display space.

Cakes should measure 9-by-13 inches and be mounted on cardboard or some other disposable base, and decorated to reflect the participating organization. Display tables will be set up to receive the cakes between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Oct. 5.

A centerpiece cake decorated to represent the 1896 courthouse will be featured, with other cakes arranged around it like squares in a quilt. The cakes will be on display from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. when they will be cut and the party will start with cake and punch.

Cake servers and tour guides, who will explain courthouse exhibits and show videotapes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be dressed to represent the various facets of Pulaski County's heritage and visitors are invited to dress in heritage regalia as well.

Board member sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors of will be making an appointment to the soil erosion and sedimentation board of appeals. This board reviews and rules on appeals made on decisions of the erosion and sedimentation administrator. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis. This is a five-year appointment.

Incumbents and interested Montgomery County citizens who are registered voters and in good tax standing should submit a letter of intent to Betty Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, VA 24073-0806. Deadline is Sept. 16.
