Business TV program

RADFORD - Bill Yerrick, host of Radford University's "Community Speaking" television program, will talk about services available through the university's Business Assistance Center on the show now airing on American Cable Entertainment's channel 9.

Guests will be Jerry Kopf, director of the center, and Bruce Blaylock, dean of the College of Business and Economics.

The program airs Sundays at 6 p.m., Tuesdays at 5 p.m., Wednesdays at noon, and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Kid's clothes sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg United Christian Aid, a community project supported by area churches to provide clothing for Montgomery County school children outside of Blacksburg, is calling for donations of clothing or money, as well as for volunteers.

Clothing donations may be brought to St. Paul United Methodist Church, beside Duncan's Texaco, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays. Especially needed are small sized jeans and tops and all sizes of jackets, as well as all husky sizes.

Monetary donations may be sent to Osie Sowder, 945 W. Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073.

Volunteers are needed to help transport and help with fitting the children. Helpers also are needed to assist with sorting and cleaning the clothing. For further information, call Alice Alley, 382-3071.

Literary conference

RADFORD - The New River Valley Reading Council will have its fall conference Sept. 21 at Radford University. The conference is titled "Books, Dreams and Literary Schemes." It will be at Heath Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ralph Masiello of Charlesbridge Publishing Co. will be the keynote speaker. Masiello has illustrated seven of Jerry Palotta's ABC books. Sherry Vaughn from Dublin Middle School will be the luncheon speaker. In addition to the speakers, several workshops will explore topics related to children's literature, such as themes and authors.

The fee is $14 and includes the conference and membership to the New River Valley

Poetry reading

BLACKSBURG - Virginian poet Dave Smith will give a reading Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the University Volume Two Bookstore. The event is free and open to the public. Smith is nationally recognized for his work who was a Pulitzer Prize runner-up for poetry in 1979 and 1981. Smith will read and sign his latest collection of poetry, "Fate's Kite."

Smith has authored more than 25 books, including "Cuba Night," "The Roundhouse Voices," and "The Essential Poe." A reissued collection of three of his books in one volume, entitled "Floating On Solitude" is due out this month. Smith currently is a professor of English at Louisiana State University and co-editor of "Southern Review" magazine.

Newcomer's Club

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Newcomers' Club will have its first meeting Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church located at the corner of Toms Creek and Prices Fork roads. Town Manager Ron Secrist will speak. The meeting will introduce many special interest groups and provide information about programs through which newcomers can meet people, learn about the community and find volunteer opportunities.

All new residents are invited to attend. Newcomer meetings are held on the second Tuesday each month, September through May. Child care is available on site for a small fee, by calling Diane at 552-5657.

Paint exchange

CHRISTIANSBURG - Free paint will be available at the third Latex Paint Exchange on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Christiansburg High School parking lot. The event is sponsored by the Montgomery County Improvement Council.

All paint brought in for disposal must be latex based, in the original labeled container and usable. Paint donors should arrive as early as possible while receivers should come later so donations can be accumulated. Please call Linda Crable at 382-5793 for more information.
