Researchers from the University of Michigan will be conducting door-to-door surveys in the New River Valley this week as part of a long-term study of election trends.
Steve Talton and other researchers with Michigan's Survey Research Center started the interviews Tuesday. This region was one of 71 geographic areas scientifically selected from census data to represent the entire country.
The National Election Study has been conducted every election year since 1948 and is intended to gauge the "needs, wants and political decisions" of U.S. citizens, according to a statement from the center. The survey results are released several months after the November election.
