Top fund-raising honors have been awarded in the 1996 Elks Lodge/MDA Lock-Up held in Roanoke on July 16. The event raised more than $17,500. John Byron Sr. was awarded top fund-raising honors. Jeffrey Shawver and Wayne Nicely were the second and third highest fund-raisers, respectively. The proceeds will provide area MDA patients with services including a monthly clinic, support group and an MDA youth summer camp.
The Salem Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center recently received a van from the nonprofit organization, the Disabled American Veterans. The van will be driven by a corps of local volunteers and is one of 141 vans that will provide transportation for veterans in 35 states and Puerto Rico.

Camp Bethel in Nace, Va., has received a grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment for $1,116, which will be used to monitor the water quality in Back Creek. This will enable Camp Bethel to expand its outdoor education program to the public.
The endowment's board of directors commended Camp Bethel for its commitment to environmental education and to stewardship of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
First Union National Bank of Virginia and the First Union Foundation have awarded $9,600 to Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem to support an education program called "Positive Alternatives for Student Success."
Andrew Lewis' program is one of nine chosen for funding through First Union's newly created Excellence in Education Grants Program.
